One of the most famous vineyards in Piedmont is Gaja, a family-owned winery that has played a pivotal role in elevating the region's wines to international acclaim. Piedmont is renowned for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Piedmont is also famous for its white wine, Moscato d'Asti, a sweet and aromatic wine made from the Moscato grape. Producers such as Michele Chiarlo and Saracco offer delightful Moscato d'Asti wines that are loved for their fragrant bouquet and refreshing sweetness.
Additionally, the region produces other notable wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Gavi. These wines exhibit unique characteristics that reflect the local terroir and grape varieties.
Piedmont's fine wines are a true expression of artistry and tradition, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence. The second vintage of the 2020 Barolo Bussia is incredible. Pure and crystalline, with brilliant clarity, it offers notes of cherry cordial, cinnamon candies, alpine herbs, and chalky earth. The palate is energetic and pure, with a subtle luxuriance of ripe, refined tannins and a gamey underlying richness as well as a long-lasting finish. This exceptional wine may supersede the 2021, which I tasted at the estate, but given how things can change dramatically with a year spent in bottle, I wouldn't be surprised to see the inverse over time. Drink over the coming 20 years.Inc. GSTSG$1,596.52 -

Good bright, deep red. Crushed blackberry, cassis and violet on the nose, plus notes of game and bitter chocolate; like a blend of serious Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanee. Offers compelling purity, sweetness and depth of fruit, with a powerful acid structure giving the mid-palate a perfumed quality and carrying the juicy fruit through a resounding, rising finish. There's great back-end grip here without any impression of austerity, thanks to the ripeness of the year. This is incredibly primary for juice that's been in barrel for nearly two years, but keep in mind that it won't be bottled for another 18 months. Still, it's likely to be a knockout. (I also tasted a very pure and vibrant sample of Brunate, which was a sour cherry fruit bomb with a liqueur-like ripeness supported by powerful spine, but I was not able to try the barrel of Le Coste.)Inc. Our first flight showcases two fabulous 2008 Barolos, wines from a vintage that continues to impress. The Barolo Brunate (formerly Brunate-Le Coste) gets most of the attention at Rinaldi. I am curious to see how the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is holding up. The answer is very well. Bright, linear and focused, in the style of the year, the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is fabulous. It is perhaps a bit more austere than its sibling, but that just adds to its super-classic feel. I love the energy here.Inc. GSTSG$2,038.08 -

The 2009 Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo/Ravera emerges from the glass with sweet red berries, leather, licorice, menthol and sweet spices, all supported by fine, silky tannins. I very much like the sense of energy and vibrancy Rinaldi was able to achieve in 2009, no small feat. The Cannubi San Lorenzo/Ravera has excellent color, freshness, vibrancy, and above all else superb balance. It is easily one of the highlights of the year.Inc. GSTSG$7,216.76 -

The 2010 Barolo Tre Tine, a last minute addition, is spectacular. I know, it’s too young, but I couldn’t help myself. These days, Rinaldi’s Barolo Brunate gets most of the attention, but in some vintages, I find the Tre Tine even more classic because of its laser like focus and youthful austerity. The 2010 is a wine that very much fits that mold. Brisk and energetic, the 2010 Tre Tine is the perfect bookend to the evening and brings us full circle to the present day.Inc. GSTSG$836.29 -

Barolo. Youthful mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Complex nose and palate. Initially the tannins play up and then leave the foreground to the closed fruit. Lots of depth and with wonderful chewy tannins. Still very, very young.Inc. GSTSG$4,184.38 -
(12x75cl) 2012Vinous (94)
The 2012 Barolo Tre Tine is lifted, precise and gracious, with beams of firm supporting tannin that give the wine its energy and sense of proportion. Tasted next to the Brunate, the Tre Tine is distinctly more aromatic, delicate and feminine in style, with plenty of bright red fruit and floral overtones. I also tasted the 2012 from a bottle opened two days prior, and the wine had retained pretty much all of its precision. Although the Brunate is the most coveted wine at Rinaldi, the Tre Tine has been impressive in its first three vintages. The 2012 is no exception. Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from the Rinaldi family's holdings in Cannubi (San Lorenzo), Ravera and Le Coste.Inc. GSTSG$5,974.16 -

Delicately fragrant and incredibly refined, this stunning red boasts alluring scents of blue flower, rose, wild berry and a whiff of new leather. It's captivatingly ethereal and elegantly structured, offering crushed strawberry, red cherry, cinnamon and white pepper. It's also impeccably balanced thanks to firm polished tannins and bright acidity. While it's already extremely tempting, hold for even more complexity. Drink 2023–2043.Inc. GSTSG$574.69 -

The 2014 Barolo Tre Tine is nervous and tightly wound, with good precision and a bit more austerity than is the norm. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, although I suspect the wine will always be a bit aggressive because of the effects of hail. There is good delineation to the bright red stone fruit, tobacco and floral notes. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 develops in coming years.Inc. GSTSG$4,405.69 -

This wine celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2016. Representing its 99th birthday, the 2015 Barolo Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from Ravera (60%), Le Coste (20%) and Cannubi San Lorenzo (20%). These sites encountered some challenges with hail in the 2014 vintage that resulted in a 30% loss of fruit. The Rinaldi family saw hail in the Brunate and Cerequio area in 2016. But the 2015 vintage saw smooth sailing and what winemaker Marta Rinaldi calls a return to normalcy. She says fermentations proceeded beautifully and without any holdups. This Barolo opens to a medium-dark garnet color with bright fruit tones followed by licorice, tar and delicate balsam herb. The wine offers a degree of softness that comes through in the quality of the tannins and the texture of the mouthfeel.Inc. GSTSG$5,042.21 -

The 2018 Barolo Tre Tine is a super-classic wine. It reminds me so much of a wine Beppe Rinaldi might have made. Readers will find an austere, taut Barolo built on energy and tension more than primary fruit. It's the sort of Barolo that blossoms only with time in bottle. Given the tendency of the wines in this vintage to exhibit quite a bit more structure and a coiled nature, I was surprised to find how elegant and silky the 2019 Barolo Tre Tine is. That’s no knock on the wine, however, as it’s stunning all the way through. Light ruby red, it’s spicy and lifted with notes of graphite, spiced strawberries, white pepper, tangerine, and rosewater. Elegant throughout, it offers fine tannins, a weightless feel, and a delicate, refined, and seamless texture, with a light warmth on the finish. Pure all the way through and long and haunting on the finish, it has a finessed touch. Drink 2025-2045.Inc. GSTSG$3,030.68 -

This is a celebrated blend of mostly Ravera with 30% to 35% Cannubi San Lorenzo and 5% Le Coste. The Giuseppe Rinaldi 2020 Barolo Tre Tine is still tight and narrow at this young stage, but it will surely flesh out with more time in bottle. There are delicate fragrances of tart berry fruit, cassis and blue flower over a streamlined and very silky mouthfeel. The Ravera vineyard near the winery measures three hectares across two distinct parcels. The first piece that faces Le Coste was planted in the 1980s, and the second parcel that looks toward Novello was planted in the 1990s.Inc. GSTSG$5,445.51 -

The 2021 Barolo Tre Tine is a pale red color and is a zesty and more lifted vintage with classic aromas of sweet red berries, raspberries, orange zest, dried earth, and fresh flowers. The palate is vibrant and tension-packed, with fantastic balance, nervous and electric energy, salty freshness, well-defined, coiled tannins, and a long finish. While it’s the most approachable of the range, this is a vintage that needs time, but it’s packed with vibrant energy and will be a vintage for the long haul. While the 2019 has more fruit, this shines more for its minerality. Most of the blend is from Ravera, with 20% each from San Lorenzo and Le Coste. Drink 2028-2058.Inc. GSTSG$5,445.51 -

The 1997 Barolo Brunate is fabulous. Here, too, I expected to find a bit more evolution, but the wine is quite fresh and has none of the roasted qualities that are such an issue elsewhere. Sure, the 1997 is not classically austere forbiddingly tannic, but it is hugely delicious and a wine of pure, total pleasure. I loved it.Inc. GSTSG$2,937.33 -

(an 80/20 blend): Light-medium red. Exotic, slightly decadent, old-style aromas of roasted strawberry, truffley underbrush, tar and brown spices. Suave on entry, then creamy in the middle, with red cherry and strawberry flavors complicated by slightly funky but fascinating porcini and earth tones. Marta describes the Brunate-La Coste as more austere, blacker wine but this 2009 is atypically gentle in the early going, even if there's plenty of ripe tannins to support a leisurely evolution in bottle.Inc. One of the most anticipated wines of the night, the 2010 Barolo Brunate delivers on all levels. Dark, potent and expansive on the palate, the Brunate captures all the magic of this great Barolo vintage. It is at once incredibly precise and impressively constituted, with explosive energy that builds over time. This is what Barolo is all about. Two thousand ten was the first vintage in which regulations required only a single vineyard to be listed on labels, although wines can be vineyard-designated with only 85% of juice from that site.Inc. Spice, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, dried cherry, macerated red cherry and anise start to open with a bit of coaxing. This is an intriguing wine, to say the least. In BondSG$3,735.00 -

Drink 2025-2045.In BondSG$2,725.00 -

The first piece that faces Le Coste was planted in the 1980s, and the second parcel that looks toward Novello was planted in the 1990s.In BondSG$4,885.00 -

Drink 2028-2058.In BondSG$4,885.00 -

I loved it.In BondSG$2,675.00 -

Marta describes the Brunate-La Coste as more austere, blacker wine but this 2009 is atypically gentle in the early going, even if there's plenty of ripe tannins to support a leisurely evolution in bottle. In BondSG$3,505.00 -

Two thousand ten was the first vintage in which regulations required only a single vineyard to be listed on labels, although wines can be vineyard-designated with only 85% of juice from that site.In BondSG$980.00
