A step up in density and fullness from the foregoing wines, with its Serralunga limestone pungency coming through loud and clear. Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. Brovia’s 2008 Barolo Garblet Sue’ bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. The 2008 Barolo Rocche dei Brovia is quite closed today, which is a bit surprising given how expressive many other wines are in this vintage. Dried rose petals, mint and licorice open up over time, but only with great reluctance. There is a crystalline purity that is highly appealing, but the 2008 is going to need at least a few years to enter the early part of its drinking window. Stylistically, the 2005 resembles the 2005, but with perhaps a little more sweetness. Juicy, youthfully tight and intense; not a rich style but elegant and perfumed, with good supporting minerality. No sign of overripeness here, unlike with many other 2009 Barolos from sandy soil.
