James Suckling (95)

Non-grafted chardonnay, this is a very compelling Champagne that has spent some 13 years resting before disgorgement in August 2015. The result is a complex array of dried lemon and biscuity notes with cocoa butter and toasty, bready complexity. The palate has smoothly rendered texture and long lemon citrus flavor with warm nutty complexity building into the finish. Superb. Drink now.

The 2004 Brut Nature La Vigne d'Antan emerges from a parcel of own-rooted Chardonnay planted on sand. A wine that has benefitted from time in bottle, the 2004 is positively stunning today. Lime, grape fruit white flowers crushed rocks and white pepper are delineated with striking precision. The 2004 has always been terrific, but today it sizzles with a level of energy I don’t recall seeing in the past. La Vigne d'Antan remains one of the most unique and compelling wines in Champagne.

The 2015 Auxey Duresses 1er Cru comes from two parcels in Les Duresses and Les Grands Champs. It has a very satisfying bouquet with lifted blackberry, briary and light earthy notes. There is a light floral note developing. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, very well balanced with tart red cherry and cranberry leaf, nicely structured with a brisk, lively finish.

The 2018 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru is a blend of Grands Champs and Les Duresses raised in around 30% new oak and 100% de-stemmed. It has a perfumed bouquet of crushed violets and iris, dark cherries and bilberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and crisp with quite a saline, punchy finish. Excellent.

(from Les Duresses and Grands Champs). Slightly more elegant aromas include those of poached plum, cassis and newly turned earth. The seductive yet dense and powerful bigger-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the solidly persistent finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This moderately rustic effort should reward a decade of improvement and last for twice that. (89-92)/2028+

The 2021 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru is a blend of three Premier Crus when it is usually two (the additional one comes from En Reugne). It has a light mulberry bouquet that just needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite saline in the mouth but it just needs more complexity on the finish.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveau from Taupenot-Merme has a more understated bouquet than Groffier's 2014 Les Haut Doix, perhaps more Morey-Saint-Denis in style, yet it is nicely focused and fresh and delivers ample mineralité. The palate is very well balanced with good substance, sappy black fruit laced with spice and a very dense but poised finish that feels primal and backwards now but will hopefully age with style. This surpasses my estimation from barrel, hence the higher score. Tasted September 2017.

Healthy dark red. Piquant high-pitched scents of raspberry, bitter cherry and crushed rock. Wonderfully dense, bright and light on its feet, offering terrific rose petal lift to its pungent red berry and saline mineral flavors. A pure expression of crushed-stone terroir, and yet there's also a silkiness here that suggests a gentle extraction. The tannins are very suave but the wine shows signs of closing down in the bottle and will need patience. I'm not sure if I'd pick this brisk, sharply delineated beauty as a 2015.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau 1er Cru has a showy bouquet with raspberry, cranberry, bergamot and tea leaf aromas, perhaps just needing a little more cohesion that should develop during the remainder of its maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, black fruit laced with graphite leading to a fresh, classically styled finish that stylistically reminds me of Morey than Chambolle. Time will let it make up its mind what it wants to grow up and become, but it will be quite excellent.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a tight-knit bouquet, earthier than the Auxey-Duresses with a touch of damp woodland complementing the sultry black fruit. The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from 0.57 hectares of 32-year-old vine, is attired in a perfumed ferrous bouquet that is broody at the moment and perhaps needs another year to open up. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, though it seems foursquare and shows slight attenuation toward the finish. It actually showed better when re-tasted a month later at the domaine when it exhibited finer precision. Drink 2014-2020.

Romain Taupenot has not been afraid to make ageworthy wines in 2012, but they aren't overly tannic or woody, just structured and well balanced. This is a case in point: a subtly oaked Grand Cru with real drive and precision. The fruit is sweet and supple, but it's surrounded by fine-grained tannins and mineral freshness.
