  • Michele et Patrice Rion Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 2023 (1x75cl)

    Burghound (91-93)

(from the villages portion of the vineyard). A more elegant, more floral and more expressive nose freely offers up its mostly cool red cherry, spice and a similar hint of crushed anise. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is positively gorgeous, even silky, with an almost pungent minerality adding a sense of lift to the long, balanced and youthfully austere finale. This is a stunningly good Chambolle villages that would make many a premier cru blush - highly recommended.

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru certainly sports one of the better aromatics from the flight of wines from Prémeaux, offering detailed black and red fruit, pressed flowers (iris) and subtle mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully integrated new oak, impressive depth and genuine finesse and complexity on the finish. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru, matured with 40% whole bunch, offers fleshy ripe black cherries, raspberry coulis and marmalade scents on the nose, a touch of bloody orange (freshly squeezed) emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with layers of pure red and black fruit. Svelte, velvety and utterly seductive, it does not stint on precision and persistence on the white pepper finish. • Michele et Patrice Rion Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Barrieres 2023 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Barrières comes from a single 0.70-hectare parcel in the north of the appellation. It doesn't quite click into gear on the nose like the wonderful 2022, rather it is perhaps more discrete with loamy scents percolating through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm grip. Fine tannins and a conspicuous, almost briny marine influence develop toward the finish, lending another dimension. It coheres nicely in the glass and it should give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure.

    Vinous (91+)

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St Marc 1er Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, like many of its NSG compadres. This seems to dissipate with aeration, although the nuance and detail of Gouges's Les Pruliers tasted alongside do not materialize. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, a little chewiness on the entry and good grip. There is a firmness here, a little obduracy that should be tamed with bottle age, so give it five years in the cellar, because there is potential. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St Marc 1er Cru, which is the domaine's monopole of just under a hectare, contains the same amount of whole bunch fruit as the Clos des Argillières and yet its presence is completely disguised. The fruit here is a little redder on the nose, showing touches of bay leaf and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with insistent grip on the entry. The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St. Marc 1er Cru is curiously much less expressive on the nose than the Clos des Argillières despite coaxing. The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos Saint-Marc 1er Cru feels a little gawky at first and takes time to coalesce in the glass. More whole bunch here, though it is in proportion to the fruit concentration. It never really develops in the glass. The palate is coarse on the entry, rigid with bitter red fruit. It just needs more flesh on the finish, which has a slightly acrid note. Not sure about this but instinct tells me that it just requires time to knit together. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Moderately saturated medium red. Subdued aromas of red berries, mocha and spicy oak are lifted by a floral quality. Not especially fleshy or sweet but more penetrating than the Clos Saint-Marc, showing good floral lift and more flavor interest. Turns a bit lean and herbal on the back end, though, finishing with slightly dry, dusty tannins and a note of menthol.

  • Michele et Patrice Rion Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillieres 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru certainly sports one of the better aromatics from the flight of wines from Prémeaux, offering detailed black and red fruit, pressed flowers (iris) and subtle mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully integrated new oak, impressive depth and genuine finesse and complexity on the finish. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
  • Michele et Patrice Rion Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillieres 2020 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru, matured with 40% whole bunch, offers fleshy ripe black cherries, raspberry coulis and marmalade scents on the nose, a touch of bloody orange (freshly squeezed) emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with layers of pure red and black fruit. Svelte, velvety and utterly seductive, it does not stint on precision and persistence on the white pepper finish. This is a brilliant Clos des Argillieres from Rion

  • Michele et Patrice Rion Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos Saint-Marc 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos Saint-Marc has a complex, quite arresting bouquet with finely tuned dark cherry and raspberry fruit, hints of incense of pressed flowers developing with time. I adore the precision of these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, notes of blackberry and raspberry preserves, a keen line of acidity and a pleasant touch of bitterness toward the long finish. This is another delightful, beautifully sculpted wine from Rion. Tasted September 2017.

  • Michele et Patrice Rion Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos Saint-Marc 2015 (1x75cl)

  • Michele et Patrice Rion Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos Saint-Marc 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St Marc 1er Cru, which is the domaine's monopole of just under a hectare, contains the same amount of whole bunch fruit as the Clos des Argillières and yet its presence is completely disguised. The fruit here is a little redder on the nose, showing touches of bay leaf and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with insistent grip on the entry. This feels quite chalky in texture, not quite as harmonious as the Clos des Argillières, but with more thrust toward the finish. This is another excellent 2017 from Rion.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St. Marc 1er Cru is curiously much less expressive on the nose than the Clos des Argillières despite coaxing. Finally, after I am already bloody late for my next appointment, it unfolds with wonderful mineral-rich blue fruit. The palate is clean and very precise, extremely focused, the oak seamlessly integrated and it fans out in splendid fashion on the lightly spiced fashion. Vinous - Neal Martin (90)
