The 2018 Les Grandes Murailles was too reduced for me to assess out of barrel, but I am pleased to say it is blossoming now that it is in bottle. It has a gorgeous black cherry, blueberry, violet and peony nose that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and generous. It is the second year in a row that Les Griffons de Pichon Baron contains Petit Verdot (11%). The fragrant bouquet, perhaps more floral than usual, features scents of pencil box, undergrowth, black fruit and just a hint of violet from the Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, and quite compact compared to the Grand Vin. Linear and strict on the finish despite the 44% Merlot, with good grip.
