A brilliant straw-yellow, almost golden color dresses the precisely clear, deep and elegantly aromatic 2012 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec, which indicates a perfect ripeness and finesse of fruit along with some oriental spice aromas. Intense and very mineral on the palate, this highly elegant, finesse-full, dense, tightly woven and clearly chalky Chenin reveals a concentrated, powerful and thrilling finish with a long and complex, very stimulating salinity. This is a great Haut-Lieu for the next ten, maybe 50 years.Inc. GSTSG$817.28 -

Bright gold. Talc, orange zest, pear and white flowers on the nose, along with a touch of pungent herbs. Tangy, finely wrought citrus flavors are given depth and texture by notes of floral honey and bitter pear skin, with a hint of tarragon emerging on the back of the palate. Slow to unfold, but finishes with excellent clarity, lift and persistence. Like 2009 and 2005, 2002 is one of the great vintages here—a year when it was possible to produce all styles at a high level of quality.Inc. GSTSG$1,241.29 -

The 2018 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux is clear, deep, pure and flinty on the intense but fine and coolish-mineral nose. Very distinctive! According to Sarah Hwang, 2022 marked “the earliest harvest—we started on the 7th of September and finished on the 17th of October.” Indeed, the 2022 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux reflects the vintage’s warm conditions with a ripe, complex bouquet of pear, white peach, exotic fruits, kumquat and floral notes. Medium- to full-bodied, it is concentrated and structured yet retains a sense of poise and lift. A delicately fleshy core of fruit is framed by bright acidity, leading to a long, ethereal finish. This is an exquisite and precise wine, particularly impressive given the solar nature of the vintage. Residual sugar: 51 grams per liter.Inc. GSTSG$350.33 -

Pure, bright yellow with golden tinges. Very pure aromas and flavors of rose petal, lime, crystallized ginger and brown spices. Hints of smoked beef and aromatic herbs add nuance to the palate, complicating flavors of orange marmalade and spicy herbs. Finishes with excellent length and so much acidity it makes your teeth hurt. I couldn’t get over just how high in acid these 2014 Hugel Gewürzes seemed to be (Gewürz is a notoriously low-acid variety) and Marc Hugel told me that in fact, for no clear reason, these wines had more or less the same acidity levels as the 2010s (2010 is, along with 2008, one of the highest-acid vintages in Alsace memory).Inc. In its very early days, Hugel’s 2005 Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles is already truly noble! Orange marmalade, caramelized peach, spiced pear and yellow plum preserves, cinnamon and mint candies, roses, and honey and white raisin fill the nose. Spectacularly luscious and expansive on the palate, honeyed, silken-textured, and loaded with primary, vividly juicy fruit such as one seldom encounters in this grape variety much less at stratospheric ripeness, this fills ones head with sweet perfume and dreams of future vinous glory – if only you can give it at least twenty years. And if one must drink it today, despite considerable sweetness, this amazing Gewurztraminer already displays not just prodigious length and profundity of flavor – saline chalky mineral suggestions and deep smoked meat pungency lending a darker side to its performance – but elegance, poise, refinement, and remarkable lift and refreshment.Inc. The 2014 Riesling Grossi Laüe is harvested from four parcels across the midslope of the marls of the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru. From a cool vintage, with a cool, rainy summer where the autumn made the vintage. This sends out only gentle notions of chamomile tincture with emerging highlights of clear honey but with an ethereal lift and a lovely smokiness that allows you to stash this way. The palate is serene, gorgeously smooth and emollient with its cooling, soothing, chamomile-scented, fresh gentleness. This is a Riesling like a caress, like a balm, while cooling, healing and soothing. Stony, complex nose features white flowers, mint, quinine, lemon and lime. Rich and dense, with a dusty sense of minerality. As stony as this riesling is, it not at all hard. Finishes very long, with a whiplash of flavor.
