Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-90)Dark red. Roasted black raspberry, plum, leather and smoked meat on the nose. Quite suave and silky in the mouth, with enticing smoke and berry flavors. This has good middle-palate fat to buffer its dusty tannins. Finishes with noteworthy persistence. A very good showing. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-91)Good medium-deep red. Ripe merlot notes of smoky raspberry and mocha dominate the nose. Fat, full and generous; lush and sweet. Very suave wine, with notes of minerals and hot bricks. Finishes with fine, integrated tannins and lovely persistence. The 2002 shows a more obvious structure today, but this is subtle and silky. |

Jeb Dunnuck (92)Deep purple-hued, the 2017 Chateau La Vieille Cure (75% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon) is a stunning success in the vintage. Notes of cassis, leafy herbs, tobacco, and spice all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, balanced, and nicely textured. With good acidity and a great finish, it's a smoking effort to drink over the coming 10-12 years. |

Decanter (94)This is intense with tons of tar and cloves against the well-defined cassis fruits and lovely vibrant violet edging. The silky texture and legs indicate generous alcohol, but this is balanced, if on the larger side. It takes its time in the glass, at first a little overpowering, but it settles into itself and has been well handled offering good ageing potential. There were new owners as of harvest 2018, as French entrepreneur Jérôme Pignard took over from American co-owners; the Gant, Ferenbach and Sachs families. |

Vinous (93)Vivid ruby. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, cherry, potpourri and Asian spices on the exotically perfumed nose. Juicy, penetrating and sweet, with intense black raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a supple, velvety texture. Finishes very long, with smooth, melting tannins and a strong note of candied flowers. There's a full-bore 16% alcohol here but I wouldn't have guessed it. |

Jeb Dunnuck (99)A true “wow” wine, the deep, concentrated 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux (there's 20% Mourvèdre) offers awesome notes of blackcurrants, smoked meats, graphite, crushed rocks, and licorice. Extraordinarily concentrated, perfectly balanced, structured, and long, it's another sensational wine from this estate. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 15-20 after that. |

Jeb Dunnuck (96+)The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Hauts-Lieux comes from slightly higher elevation sites and includes more Mourvèdre than the Les Trois Source release. It’s pure, full-bodied, and incredibly structured, with a tight, backward style that’s going to benefit from bottle age. Showing a distinct salty minerality as well as loads of black and blue fruits, it reminds me of the 2015 yet with more elegance. Hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades. |
