Enveloping nose of super-ripe orange, pomegranate and cigar leaf that’s still very youthful and needs time to reveal its myriad nuances. Also notes of licorice, dried herbs and rose petals. Enormous concentration, silkiness and finesse on the expansive palate. Extravagant in the best sense of that word! The finish gets finer, the closer it gets to infinity. Very darkly coloured indeed. An extraordinarily deep and Mourvèdre-heavy fug of a scent; deep, but so fresh and searching. It's not overly full-bodied or heavy. Great surging acidity. It's tannic and will take a long time to soften, but promises great freshness and a long life - don't open too young. Around 60% of the blend comes from old-vine Mourvèdre from the Courrieux vineyard. Lastly, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin is another 2022 that has some resemblance to this estate’s 2009. It just screams Mourvèdre with its wild aromatics of bloody red and blue fruits, herbes de Provence, rare meat, and peppery, spicy nuances. These all carry to a full-bodied yet still balanced, elegant 2022 that stays focused and precise on the palate, with building tannins and a salty finish that makes you salivate. I know there's a tendency to hide these away and think that they're never ready to drink, but they offer incredible pleasure with just short-term cellaring, and this will be no exception.

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel was bottled just two weeks before my visit, hence the plus sign attached to its rating. Planted just outside the boundaries of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the vines here average 80 years old. Mouthwatering aromas of red fruit and spice lead the way, backed by a full-bodied wine that's creamy and lush but also silky and vibrant. As always, it's one of the best Côtes du Rhône wines from a given vintage.

Spicy herbs, ground pepper, leather, and spicy red and black fruits define the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel, a medium-bodied, elegant, complex red that should age nicely for 8-10 years, if not longer. I certainly see no need to delay gratification, though.

  • Beaurenard Chateauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard 2000 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

A candidate for wine of the vintage is the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard. Subtle aromas of vanillin intermixed with blackberry, black cherry, chocolate, and espresso characteristics explode from the glass. In the mouth, there is firm tannin as well as enormous fruit, undeniable southern Rhone typicity, powerful, concentrated, thick flavors, and a finish that lasts for 45+ seconds. This is a stunning effort for Boisrenard. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.
  • Beaurenard Chateauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard 2001 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

There have been a number of spectacular vintages of Domaine de Beaurenard’s luxury cuvee, Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard, but the 2001 may be the finest they have ever produced. An inky/purple color is accompanied by aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice, graphite, and a touch of barrique. The explosive bouquet is followed by an expansive, full-bodied, powerful wine with great purity, tremendous multilayered flavor intensity, and beautifully integrated wood, acidity, and tannin. It possesses structure, grip, and a finish that lasts well over a minute. Despite its enormous richness and presence (aromatically and on the palate), it requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15-18. It is a brilliant success!
  • Belle Crozes-Hermitage Cuvee Louis Belle 2018 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (95)

Rivaling the 2015, if not even better (time will tell), the 2018 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle is a rock star of a Crozes-Hermitage, revealing a dense purple color as well as fabulous crème de cassis and blackberry fruits interwoven with peppered beef, violets, new leather, and flowers. The real deal, it's concentrated and full-bodied, with wonderful tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. It has a pure, polished, almost modern edge, yet it brings plenty of background meaty, bloody, black olive notes with time in the glass and is pure Crozes-Hermitage gold. Drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years.

  • Belle Hermitage 2018 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

A powerful, full-bodied, straight-up awesome wine, the 2018 Hermitage from Domaine Belle comes from the more limestone soils of the Les Murets lieu-dit and spent more than two years in barrel. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a smorgasbord-like array of kirsch, jammy blackberries, acacia flowers, violets, ground pepper, and cured meats. With full-bodied richness, a rich, opulent, incredibly sexy texture, sweet tannins, and a great finish, we're in blockbuster territory, and along with the 2017, it's the finest Hermitage I've tasted from this domaine. It has another 15-20 years (probably longer) of prime drinking.

Tasted as a sample blended from several foudres, the 2018 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel features scents of sun-warmed stones and ripe raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it's plush and open-knit, already giving a lot of pleasure, and finishing zesty and long.

A well-balanced, perfectly ripe, very fresh expression this year. Fine tannins, with good grip, harmonious acidity and dark streak of concentrated fruit into the finish. You'll be glad you bought some of this. Not hugely deep or hugely complex, but beautifully balanced. 30% Grenache, 30% Mourv

    Jeb Dunnuck (90)

Spicy herbs, ground pepper, leather, and spicy red and black fruits define the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel, a medium-bodied, elegant, complex red that should age nicely for 8-10 years, if not longer. I certainly see no need to delay gratification, though.

Shimmering ruby. Expressive, mineral-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of garrigue and pungent flowers. Energetic and focused on the palate, offering sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become deeper and sweeter as the wine unfolds. Juicy and sharply focused, displaying strong, spicy lift on the long penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and repeating florality.
