James Suckling (97)

If anyone tells you that Châteauneuf is just a big red that’s never elegant, then they need to taste this masterpiece of elegance. So many spicy and savory nuances on the very concentrated but almost perfectly proportioned palate. This is both joyful and serious at the very long, focused finish. Decades of aging potential! Drink or hold.

In spite of its extreme youth, this great Chateuneuf-du-Pape leaps out at you with its depth of wet-earth, ripe red-berry and dried-flower aromas. Rich and concentrated, but so suave and refined. Incredible length! Already delicous, but this has a great future ahead of it. Drink or hold.

One of my favorite whites from the south of France is Daniel Brunier’s Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc and his 2019 is another stunning effort. Always a blend of Clairette, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Bourboulenc brought up in foudre, this beauty boasts an exotic nose of honeyed peach, quince, crushed citrus, and salty minerality, all with a floral edge. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with flawless balance and beautifully integrated acidity, enjoy this concentrated white anytime over the coming 15-20 years.

Vivid ruby. Mineral-laced red berry preserve, spicecake and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of smoky minerals and pungent herbs. Juicy, sharply focused raspberry and bitter cherry flavors become deeper and sweeter with air while maintaining energy. Shows very good breadth and thrust on the sweet, red-fruit-dominated finish, which is framed by gentle, slow-building tannins.

Initially restrained aromas of zesty blackberry in this wine gain intricacies of rose petal, violet, graphite and dusty mineral. Sourced from the producer's younger vines and gentler slopes, its black cherry and berry flavors are zesty and pure yet anchored by granite and fine, persistent tannins. Ready now the wine should improve through 2030 and hold further.

Starting with what could be considered the entry level cuvée, the 2020 Cornas Granit 30 comes from further down the slope, from vines closer to the village. That's obviously not a bad thing, since this plump, full-bodied, beautifully textured Cornas has remarkable purity and elegance as well as richness. Blackberries, blueberries, subtle smoke, graphite, and violets all emerge from the glass, and it has a seamless, incredibly elegant texture.

Lieux-dits Patou, Mazard and Sauman, 70% destemmed, aged for 15 months in old barriques. A nose that draws you in and pulls you under; it’s very tightly wound for now, but contains fresh, ripe black fruits, Asian spices, soy and some woodland aromas. Full-bodied, but not massive or overly thick, it coats the palate in super-fresh fruit and very fine tannins. There is ample acidity too to help shape the wine. This is very powerful, but what hits you is the extraordinary aromatic and textural refinement of what can be an untameable terroir. Very, very long, saline finish.

Tasted from tank prior to bottling, the 2016 Cornas Granit 60 has the potential to eclipse the 2015. The nose is an exciting blend of flowers, minerals and fruit, while the palate is full-bodied and generous without the hardness or austerity of the 2015. This standout 2016 finishes long, plush and bright. With only about 5,000 bottles made, shrewd buyers will snap it up on release.

Paris's 2018 Cornas Granit 60 boasts remarkably pure notes of cracked pepper, blueberries and raspberries. The 2018 Cornas La Geynale is largely in the same style as the Granit 60, only with the gamey, bloody and meaty character (as well as tannins) turned up a notch. Black and blue fruits, rare meat, ground pepper, and wild herbs all give way to a structured, tannic wine that has beautiful purity and elegance. It's not for those looking for instant gratification, however. This cuvée comes from a single parcel, is not destemmed, and will see 16 months in 2- to 8-year-old barrels.

Chateauneuf du Pape, in the Rhone, pioneered the Appellation Controlee system by drawing up the first rules in 1923 regulating production, providing a prototype for others. This regulated yields, alcohol levels and what grapes could be grown where. The Rhone has gone through a resurgence with more of its appellations distinctive identities being asserted and respected.
