Burghound (92)

Outstanding. Much like the Limozin, the expressive nose is perfumed and elegant with its cool array of just sliced citrus, smoked apple and subtle floral and spice wisps. There is excellent punch to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. Like several of the wines in the range, this could use better depth but it is clearly built-to-age and developing more complexity should just be a matter of patience.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

5 Star Wine. From Les Santenots-du-Milieu, dating back to 1976 plus some young vines. Bright crimson, deep yet fresh dark raspberry on the nose, very sensual, this is sumptuous on the palate and thrilling too, absolutely at ease. The clay gives the depth without losing Volnay elegance.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
