Champagne

Champagne, the epitome of elegance and celebration, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of sparkling wines. As one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, Champagne has captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs with its exceptional quality, refined craftsmanship, and iconic vineyards.

Historically, Champagne has been dominated by some world-acclaimed Champagne House, which source grapes and harvest from Champagne growers. These famous Grandes Marques include Louis Roederer (Cristal), Dom PérignonKrug, Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Bollinger, all of them are revered for their notable names that display unrivalled winemaking prestige and pedigree.

In the recent decade, the emerging Grower Champagne trend in Champagne is shaking up the industry by challenging the dominance of the big Champagne houses. These small-scale producers, also known as "Récoltant-Manipulant" or RM, grow their own grapes and produce their own Champagne, showcasing the unique terroir and character of their vineyards. Jacques SelosseUlysse Collin, and Champagne Vilmart & Cie are among the most prominent names in this trend, producing some truly artisanal and terroir-driven Champagnes.

Champagne is primarily made from three main grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. These grapes are carefully selected and blended to create a harmonious and complex flavour profile. Chardonnay contributes elegance, freshness, and finesse, while Pinot Noir adds structure, depth, and fruitiness. Pinot Meunier brings a touch of roundness and vibrancy to the blend.

The region of Champagne is divided into several distinct sub-regions, including Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne. Each sub-region has its unique terroir, characterized by variations in soil composition and microclimates, which influence the style and character of the wines produced.

Champagne offers various styles, from non-vintage blends to vintage cuvées and prestigious prestige cuvées. While Non-vintage Champagnes typically epitomise the house style, the vintage Champagnes are made from grapes harvested in one particular year (top vintages such as 1996, 2002, 2008 etc), in which these wines showcase the unique characteristics of the specific vintage.

The prestige cuvées, often the flagship wines of the renowned Champagne houses, are the pinnacle of excellence. These exceptional Champagnes are created using the finest grapes, the most meticulous winemaking techniques and often benefit from extended ageing to achieve unparalleled complexity and finesse.

Champagne is synonymous with celebration, elegance, and luxury. Its effervescent charm and timeless appeal have made it the drink of choice for countless special occasions and memorable moments. With its rich history, iconic vineyards, and unrivalled quality, Champagne continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91)

The NV (2023) Extra-Brut Garennes is a blend of vintages 2023 back to 2013. Soft and open-knit, the Garennes caresses the palate with hints of orchard fruit, chamomile, dried flowers and spice. The lifted, ethereal style is quite attractive. This is the most open-knit of Vincent Laval's new releases. I would give it a bit of aeration. This release was aged for 11 months in French oak, with some lees-stirring. Dosage is 1 gram per liter. Disgorged: November 2025.

There's a plush creaminess to this balanced Champagne, and citrusy acidity enlivens the expressive flavors of blackberry clafoutis, lemon curd and grilled nut. Hints of spice and grated ginger play on the finish. Disgorged September 2019. Drink now through 2025. 7,000 cases made, 86 cases imported. — AN

Vinous (94)

The 2007 Extra-Brut Vintage Celebris is a great example of the house style. Powerful and rich, the 2007 possesses tremendous vinous intensity, buffered by low dosage that gives the wine ts sense if classic austerity. Orchard fruit, apricot, tangerine oil and white flowers develop with a bit of coaxing. The Celebris is a big, broad-shouldered Champagne for the dinner table.

Falstaff (97)

The nose of the golden wine immediately radiates creaminess, a soft richness that is reminiscent of freshly baked apricot and almond tart and red apple flesh, laced with fine, heady notions of freshly zested Tarocco orange peel. The palate is as creamy as the nose suggests, yet has the poise and the beautiful, salty depth of 2008. A lovely phenolic edge reminds of bitter almond and apple pip, this sits well with the sinuous, toned and lightly salty richness, the ultra-fine mousse and that lovely streak of ripe lemon zest. Gorgeous.

Falstaff (98)

The nose opens with a slightly floral but exquisitely fragrant nose of orange cake, evocative of golden crust, with air a hint of iron-oxide appears. The palate presents ripest apricot on a generous, rounded full-fruited but precise body. Supremely creamy mousse underlines soaringly brisk freshness.

The citrus-yellow Gosset NV Extra-Brut (dosage: five grams per liter) is an assemblage of Chardonnay (32%), Pinot Noir (45%) and Pinot Meunier (23%) sourced in 11 villages. This is a deliciously lithe, fresh, elegant, well-structured and creamy-textured cuvée with charmingly round fruit and stimulating mineral grip in the pure, fresh, super precise and delicate finish. This is an impressive cuvée and a great effort at this price point! Tasted in August 2018; lot number unknown.

A hint of chalk appears even before subtle notes of autolysis become apparent. The slender palate comes with disarming freshness and poise, revealing edges of fresh lemon, subtle patisserie, more chalk and richer hints of lemon oil. Precise in character with a very fine mousse, and so long.

Wine Advocate (93)

Dressed in a unique color that I would describe as a salmon pink with orange (or onion) reflections, Gosset's NV Grand Rosé Brut – a blend of 58% Chardonnay and 42% Pinot Noir, 8% red wine inclusive) – opens with a highly delicate and matured, vinous bouquet of red fruits. Pure, light, highly elegant, round and intense on the fruity-mineral palate, this is a picture-book Champagne of great finesse and delicacy. The persistent finish is lovely, pure and extremely stimulating in its salty/mineral freshness; whereas the fruit is articulated in an aristocratic reticence and perfectly integrated into the noble, overall expression. No malolactic fermentation. This is the kind of sample that I don't want to give away, but drink for myself. Gorgeous!

Gosset is the oldest house in Champagne, and is a favourite among wine trade insiders. This non-vintage cuvée is redolent with the aromas of mellow red apple fruit. It has beautifully subtle autolysis on the palate, with creamy apple and plum flavours, and a great precision at the same time.

Wine Advocate (95)

Based on the 2018 vintage and disgorged in January 2025 without dosage, Guillaume Selosse’s NV Blanc de Blancs Cramant Au Dessus du Gros Mont is an equal blend of the base vintage and a historic cuvée dating back to 2008. The base wine is aged entirely in new 228-liter barrels from Cavin and Tonnellerie Atelier Centre. Produced along the same lines as the lieux-dits of Jacques Selosse, it bursts from the glass with a delicately high-toned bouquet of apple peel, dried apricot, mandarin, toasted bread, sandalwood and almond paste, mingled with thyme. On the palate, it is full-bodied, ample and textural, with an intensely flavored core of fruit that is underpinned by ripe yet vibrant acidity and framed by chalky, structuring extract, concluding in a long, perfumed finish. Readers will recognize that this wine derives from a parcel in Cramant that Guillaume received as a gift from his grandmother on his 18th birthday. Situated at the top of the slope, it benefits from two contrasting exposures—one portion faces south, while the other faces north.

Wine Advocate (96)

Based on the 2019 vintage and disgorged in February 2024 with 1.5 grams per liter dosage, Guillaume Selosse’s NV Blanc de Noirs Largillier, as usual, derives from the same vines within the monopole of Jérôme Coessens in Aube and is made at the former Jacques Selosse cellar in Avize, which is located at street level and is considerably drier. After spending two years in barrels, with minimal topping up, the wine with its lees is then transferred for an additional year in a horizontal 28-hectoliter stainless steel tank to complement the 300 liters of historical blend (reserve). In other words, the wine is matured on its fine lees for three full years before bottling. All this effort is based on the raw material itself, as the fruit, even picked at end of harvest at high maturity, has a very low pH with a laser-like profile, hence the choice of long élevage. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of toasted nuts, dried fruit, tangerine zest and spices, it’s flamboyant and textural with a tangy line of acidity and chalky structuring extract bringing freshness to its generous profile. I must report that it’s one of the last releases of this superb cuvée. “I've understood the terroir and have decided to stop with the 2021 vintage, as I want to dedicate my full attention to Jacques Selosse and Au Dessus du Gros Mont, the plots that we own," Guillaume explains.
