Champagne
Champagne, the epitome of elegance and celebration, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of sparkling wines. As one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, Champagne has captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs with its exceptional quality, refined craftsmanship, and iconic vineyards.
Historically, Champagne has been dominated by some world-acclaimed Champagne House, which source grapes and harvest from Champagne growers. These famous Grandes Marques include Louis Roederer (Cristal), Dom Pérignon, Krug, Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Bollinger, all of them are revered for their notable names that display unrivalled winemaking prestige and pedigree.
In the recent decade, the emerging Grower Champagne trend in Champagne is shaking up the industry by challenging the dominance of the big Champagne houses. These small-scale producers, also known as "Récoltant-Manipulant" or RM, grow their own grapes and produce their own Champagne, showcasing the unique terroir and character of their vineyards. Jacques Selosse, Ulysse Collin, and Champagne Vilmart & Cie are among the most prominent names in this trend, producing some truly artisanal and terroir-driven Champagnes.
Champagne is primarily made from three main grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. These grapes are carefully selected and blended to create a harmonious and complex flavour profile. Chardonnay contributes elegance, freshness, and finesse, while Pinot Noir adds structure, depth, and fruitiness. Pinot Meunier brings a touch of roundness and vibrancy to the blend.
The region of Champagne is divided into several distinct sub-regions, including Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne. Each sub-region has its unique terroir, characterized by variations in soil composition and microclimates, which influence the style and character of the wines produced.
Champagne offers various styles, from non-vintage blends to vintage cuvées and prestigious prestige cuvées. While Non-vintage Champagnes typically epitomise the house style, the vintage Champagnes are made from grapes harvested in one particular year (top vintages such as 1996, 2002, 2008 etc), in which these wines showcase the unique characteristics of the specific vintage.
The prestige cuvées, often the flagship wines of the renowned Champagne houses, are the pinnacle of excellence. These exceptional Champagnes are created using the finest grapes, the most meticulous winemaking techniques and often benefit from extended ageing to achieve unparalleled complexity and finesse.
Champagne is synonymous with celebration, elegance, and luxury. Its effervescent charm and timeless appeal have made it the drink of choice for countless special occasions and memorable moments. With its rich history, iconic vineyards, and unrivalled quality, Champagne continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Emmanuel Brochet’s NV Le Mont Benoit (2019 base) continues, year after year, to reaffirm its position as one of the most able exponents of this distinctive chalk outcropping on the plain west of the Montagne de Reims. Serving as an eloquent ambassador for its southeast-facing vineyard, this cuvée encapsulates sense of place, artisinal character and precision all at once. I began following Brochet’s work over a decade ago, and as critical acclaim for his wines has steadily—and deservedly—increased, I’ve found even greater joy in savoring bottles opened by friends, keeping the few remaining for myself. The 2019-base Le Mont Benoit, incorporating 20% reserve wines, continues to impress. It rises from the glass with an evocative bouquet of beeswax, crisp red apple and dried white flowers, mingling with nuances of brioche and peeled almond. On the palate, it is full-bodied, concentrated and profoundly layered, with a generous core of fruit enlivened by abundant chalky structuring extract and mouthwatering acidity that lends it vitality and structure and carries through the searingly saline finish. 100% Pinot Noir blend based on 2013. Disgorged September 2018. Dosage 3.5 g/l. Tasted immediately after the all-Pinot Noir Roses de Jeanne 2017 and it's more obviously oaky and savoury on the nose. Rather like the stereotypical Bollinger with lots to chew on – meaty, stereotypically 'masculine'. Very complete and not remotely austere. Dense but also manages to be vibrant and refreshing. Cries out for something to nibble on at the same time, as recommended by the late Edmund Penning-Rowsell. QGVInc. GSTSG$276.32 -

I must say that I was quite excited to taste the Champagne that everybody talked about, but no one tasted yet. A great reunion with my old friend, Rodolphe Péters whose champagne making skills are nothing less than exceptional. A ground-breaking style that blends Chardonnay from Côte de Blancs of which one part is the actual vintage, one part reserve wines and one part mature wines from bottle. The rosé part being Pinot Noir from Vertus made as a rosé de saignée blended just before bottling to keep the notion of youthful red fruity freshness. It shows a very gentle bright rosé colour and a vivid mousse with fine bubbles. The nose starts out elegantly – layered and nuanced with chalky notes, fresh hazelnut, marzipan, fresh butter, pink citrus and lemongrass. After some time in the glass the Pinot enters with aromas of crushed raspberry, cherry and pain d´épice. The palate is nicely built, showing great flavour intensity and an invigorating freshness. It´s classically bone dry (4,5 grams of dosage) with a chalky presence, balanced by a mellow creaminess. Flavours of marzipan, confit de citron and peach with layers of mature nuttiness and pastry. Elegantly built with great persistency and precision. Drinks truly well today but should certainly improve from further cellaring.Inc. GSTSG$455.89 -

On the palate, it reveals notes of red berries, subtle floral nuances, and a refreshing minerality, balanced by a fine, persistent mousse. Emmanuel Brochet's dedication to sustainable viticulture and precise vinification techniques shine through in this elegant and refined rosé. QGVIn BondSG$237.00 -

Bottled spring 2013. 30% Chardonnay, 70% Pinot Noir. Vintages 2012 back to 2006. All oak fermented. Quite deep straw. Quite frothy and aggressive mousse. Much harder work than the Blanc de Noirs. Quite a chewy finish. Pretty hard work!In BondSG$164.00 -

Drinks truly well today but should certainly improve from further cellaring. In BondSG$410.00 -

The NV Brut Rosé Petite Fleur (base 2021) is a very pretty wine. Sweet red cherry fruit, cranberry, mint, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco lend lovely aromatic nuance. The 2021 base is a touch forward, so I would not push my luck on aging. Then again, the Petite Fleur is made for early drinking. The Petite Fleur comes across as a Rosé with a bit of bottle age. Readers who enjoy Rosés with that kind of slightly mature character will enjoy this quite a bit.In BondSG$140.00 -
