Bernard Magrez's 2019 Les Grands Chênes is seriously impressive. Deep, layered and complex, the 2019 is full of character. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint, new leather, licorice, cedar and iron all take shape in the glass. The long creamy finish. There is a lot of wine here, especially for the money. From an estate recently purchased by Sylvie Cazes, who is renovating the estate, the 2015 Château Chauvin checks in as a blend of 80% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, from sandy/clay soils, that was brought up in 60% new barrels. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a pure, elegant bouquet of crème de cassis, damp earth, candle wax, and spring flowers. I continue to love the wines from this château. The 2019 Château Chauvin shows an impeccably balanced, elegant, yet still concentrated style that's well worth seeking out. Mostly Merlot (there's some Cabernet Franc as well as a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon), its deep purple hue is followed by a clean, pure, medium to full-bodied wine offering classic ripe darker cherry and currant fruits as well as spicy oak, chalky minerality, and hints of tobacco. It's still closed and reserved today, yet the balance is spot on, it has beautifully ripe tannins, and a great mid-palate. The 1964 Cheval Blanc is a legendary wine, and having been privileged to taste it several times, I believe this might well be the finest specimen that I have ever tasted. It's, quite simply, magical. Utterly ethereal on its kaleidoscopic nose, it offers melted red fruit, shavings of black truffle, wilted rose petals and sous-bois. There is an unerring sense of symmetry. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins that frame the millefeuille of red and black fruit, hints of meat juices, clove and truffle. It possesses ethereal poise and fans out with effortless audacity on the finish. This is a bona fide perfect wine that is so good that it's almost impossible to translate into words. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a pure, elegant bouquet of crème de cassis, damp earth, candle wax, and spring flowers. I continue to love the wines from this château. The 2019 Château Chauvin shows an impeccably balanced, elegant, yet still concentrated style that's well worth seeking out. Mostly Merlot (there's some Cabernet Franc as well as a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon), its deep purple hue is followed by a clean, pure, medium to full-bodied wine offering classic ripe darker cherry and currant fruits as well as spicy oak, chalky minerality, and hints of tobacco. It's still closed and reserved today, yet the balance is spot on, it has beautifully ripe tannins, and a great mid-palate. The 1964 Cheval Blanc is a legendary wine, and having been privileged to taste it several times, I believe this might well be the finest specimen that I have ever tasted. It's, quite simply, magical. Utterly ethereal on its kaleidoscopic nose, it offers melted red fruit, shavings of black truffle, wilted rose petals and sous-bois. There is an unerring sense of symmetry. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins that frame the millefeuille of red and black fruit, hints of meat juices, clove and truffle.
