  • Canon la Gaffeliere 2021 (1x300cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)

The 2021 Canon-La-Gaffelière is gorgeous, but it is also very closed today. I view that as a positive for its long-term prospects, but readers need to be patient here. The 2021 is a super-classic Canon-La-Gaffelière redolent of strong floral and mineral accents. Its energy and sheer breeding are truly remarkable. I can't wait to taste it with bottle age. Bright saline notes extend the long, beautifully persistent finish. The 2021 was aged 40% in new oak, 20% in tank and the remainder in used oak and 400-liter barrels. This really pulses with energy.

  • Cantemerle 1995 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 1995

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (85-88)

Superb ruby-red color. Spicy berry nose, with notes of cinnamon and coffee: slight suggestions of greenness and alcohol. Supple, soft and smooth. but with more breadth than intensity. Fine, spicy aftertaste, with flavors of coffee and caramel. Should evolve fairly quickly.
  • Cantemerle 1998 (12x75cl)

Crushed berries with a leafy undertone. Full-bodied and chewy, with a medium finish. Needs a tiny bit more ripe fruit at midpalate to score outstanding. Score range: 85-89
  • Cantemerle 1999 (2x150cl)

  • Cantemerle 2001 (1x75cl)
    (1x75cl) 2001

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-89)

(essentially 55% merlot and 45% cabernet sauvignon, but with bits of petit verdot and cabernet franc) Good full medium ruby. Roasted but lively aromas of cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate, game and tobacco. A moderately dense, persistent wine with good mid-palate sweetness and stuffing to support its tannins. Still, this slightly minty wine finishes a tad dry.
  • Cantemerle 2002 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (85-88)

Medium saturated ruby-red. Aromas of raspberry, espresso, cocoa powder and sexy oak spices. Sweet on entry, then supple in the middle, with an edge of acidity. Finishes with good breadth, tongue-dusting tannins and notes of black fruits and mint. My enthusiasm was tempered by a slight green streak running through the wine.

    (24x37.5cl) 2006

    Wine Advocate (92)

The 2006 Cantemerle was the surprise package of the blind tasting at Farr Vintners' horizontal. It has a conservative nose with rosemary and undergrowth scents that open nicely in the glass, but retain a sense of classicism. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, lightly spiced red berry fruit, sage and white pepper, quite persistent on the finish, which feels very pure. What an outstanding 2006 Claret - a Cantemerle that punches well above its weight. Tasted April 2016.

    (6x150cl) 2005

    Wine Spectator (90)

Shows blackberry and plum skin aromas, with hints of vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft, velvety tannins and a pretty, fruity aftertaste. An elegant, balanced style. Lingers on the palate. Best after 2012. 33,330 cases made. -JS

  • Cantemerle 2010 (12x75cl)

    James Suckling (94)

A wine with blueberry and mineral aromas follows through to a full body, with fine tannins and a juicy finish. Best for years from here. Needs at least three years of bottle age to soften. Could be better than 2009 in the long run.

  • Cantemerle 2014 (12x75cl)

    James Suckling (94)

I like the floral character, which highlights the aromas of currants and berries. Full body and a firm and tight center palate. Silky tannins and a savory and creamy-textured finish. A beautifully balanced red. Try in 2021, but it’s already gorgeous to taste.

Impressive richness and clarity of red and dark berries. Lightly spiced-pastry aromas, too. The palate has a very crisp, polished and groomed tannin texture, as well as super fresh flavors that carry long. Great wine. Try from 2022.

This is another successful vintage from this estate. It is so finely structured that you notice the blackberry fruit more than the tannins, with a seam of crisp acidity throughout.

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years. This is a selection of some of our favourite vintages from Bordeaux over the last few decades, as well some more recent ones.
