Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)An estate that’s on an upward trajectory, having just completed work on a new cellar, the 2018 Château Ripeau comes from just over 12 hectares of vines situated near the likes of Cheval Blanc, Figeac, and La Dominique, and is a rough blend of 67% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon that will spend 16-18 months in new French oak. It offers a deep purple color as well as terrific purity and precision in its vibrant cassis and black raspberry fruits and notes of spring flowers, spice box, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, silky, and seamless on the palate, it has building tannins, ample mid-palate depth, and good concentration, and stays light on its feet and incredibly elegant. This estate is managed by Julien Salles and gets consulting advice from Claude Gros. My money is on this 2018 being the best to date, and I suspect the best is still to come! |

Jeb Dunnuck (93-95+)Coming from a vineyard in the northern part of the appellation, not far from Cheval Blanc, the 2020 Château Ripeau has a medium to full-bodied, fresh yet concentrated style as well as impressive purity in its blue fruits, cassis, and floral aromas and flavors. The tannins are present yet ripe and soft, it has a layered, deep mid-palate, and the freshness of the vintage. It’s unquestionably a beautiful wine in the making. Give bottles 4-5 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following two decades. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (88-91)Sweet red berries, hard candy, crushed flowers, spices and mint are some of the many notes that meld together in the glass as the 2013 Roc de Cambes opens up in the glass. The 2013 is super-ripe, racy and layered, but in the soft, silky style of the year. Roc de Cambes is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new oak barrels. The style is all about texture and silkiness. The 2013 finishes with sweet floral and spice notes, as well as terrific freshness. |

The Wine Cellar Insider (92)Wet earth, spearmint, licorice, cocoa and plums smell and taste great. The wine is silky, polished and rich, there is volume and freshness that drives home the fruity qualities in the finish. This is the best Roc de Cambes ever produced. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)The 2016 Roc de Cambes is powerful, tightly wound and closed in on itself. That should not be an issue, but readers should be prepared to be patient. Iron, smoke, tobacco, cedar, menthol and licorice all add aromatic nuance to a core of dark fruit. I also tasted a bottle that had been opened two days prior. There I found a wine of amplitude and breadth. This is another superb 2016 from the Mitjavile family. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)The 2017 Roc de Cambes is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous power the 2017 is positively stellar from the very first taste. Macerated dark cherries, sage, spice, star anise, orange zest, mint and new leather give the 2017 an exotic, racy feel that is hard to fully describe. In the glass, the 2017 possesses off the charts aromatic intensity and tons of pure fruit richness, while the 100% new oak is barely perceptible. Readers lucky enough to find it will enjoy a wine of tremendous character and personality. This is an absolutely stunning wine from Francois and Nina Mitjavile. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)The 2019 Roc de Cambes has come together beautifully since I tasted it en primeur. The balance of dark red cherry/plum fruit and blood orange is so intriguing. The 2019 bristles with energy, much of it surely attributable to the 20% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92-94)The 2020 Roc de Cambes opens with a huge bouquet of scorched earth, tar, licorice, gravel and incense. A rich, explosive wine, this is going to need at least a few years to come together, but it is impressive even in the early going. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, spice, leather and floral accents linger on the substantial finish. There is a lot of wine here. |
