The Drinks Business (92-94)Prieuré-Lichine (Margaux; 65% Cabernet Sauvignon; 30% Merlot; 5% Petit Verdot; 13% alcohol; a final yield of 36 hl/ha; tasted at the UGCB press tasting). Once again, this is very archetypally Margaux. Rose petals and dried rose petals, dried herbs and a touch of violet too. Fresh, bright, crunchy red and darker berry fruit; a little blackcurrant leaf too; and just a hint of fresh tobacco leaf. Very expressive aromatically and very refined on the entry and through the dense and compact (for the vintage) mid-palate; sinuous and quite crystalline. Very sapid and juicy, this is excitingly fresh with a lovely sense of balance on the long finish. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)The 2023 Prieuré-Lichine is seriously impressive. Rich and layered in the glass, the 2023 possesses notable textural richness and elegance. Dark-toned fruit, spice, new leather and licorice flesh out over time. This is an especially rich vintage for Prieuré-Lichine, but it's a style that works so well here. The 2023 impresses with its total sense of balance and harmony. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89)Bright ruby-red. Aromas of currant, mocha, truffle and smoke. Fat and plump but with only moderate cut to the sweet flavors of red fruits, truffle and smoke. Offers plenty of sex appeal and a high-pH mouth feel but could use a bit more energy (I would never have picked this blind as a wine from the Moueix stable). Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. |

Wine Advocate (93)This limited-production, 100% Merlot cuvee is a beauty. Sweet, almost caramelized black cherry fruit and dark mountain berries intermixed with forest floor and a touch of subtle oak characterize this full-bodied, rich, concentrated, superb Pomerol that should hit its stride in 3-4 years and last for two decades. Unfortunately, the production is only about 1,500 cases. |

Puy-Blanquet 2023 is a finely judged Saint-Emilion red from Bordeaux, France, prized by insiders for its classical Right Bank poise. The estate is closely associated with the neighbouring First Growth of Saint-Émilion, Château Ausone, and shares the same exacting, detail-driven approach in the vineyard and cellar. In 2023, Puy-Blanquet delivers a supple, medium-bodied profile: ripe black cherry and plum are framed by subtle floral lift, gentle spice and a savoury, mineral edge that speaks to its Saint-Emilion origins. The palate is polished rather than forceful, with discreet tannins, bright line and a clean, persistent finish—an expression aimed at nuance over sheer power. A compelling, terroir-led Puy-Blanquet to follow from youth for its charm, yet with the structure to evolve gracefully in bottle. |

For serious connoisseurs seeking an epitome of Bordeaux sophistication, indulge in the Puygueraud Cotes de Francs 2008. This remarkable wine hails from the esteemed Thienpont family, masters of viticulture in Bordeaux since the 19th century. Exquisitely crafted within the prestigious Cotes de Francs AOC, the eloquent soil, combined with optimal maturation, created this laudable vinous expression. Harvested from a medley of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec vines, this 2008 vintage bespeaks of terroir specificity and vintner dedication. It exudes an alluring aroma of ripe black cherries and plums, foreshadowing the captivating palate of luscious fruits, replete with spicy and earthy undertones. Each sip reveals the careful process of 18 months of maturation in French oak barrels, tethering an ageing potential of 10-15 years. Effortlessly elegant and complex, the Puygueraud Cotes de Francs 2008 adds an impressive flair to any wine collection, perfectly embodying the esteemed Bordeaux wine-making tradition. |

Jeb Dunnuck (91)Deeply colored, the 2017 Chateau Puygueraud checks in as a blend of 63% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Malbec that spent 12-16 months in barrel. It's a winner, with lots of fruit and richness as well as classic notes of dark fruits, leafy herbs, damp earth, and spring flowers. I'd be happy to drink this rounded, textured, medium-bodied effort any time over the coming 7-8 years. You'd be forgiven for claiming Pomerol in a blind tasting. Tasted twice. |
