Perhaps more importantly, Haut-Bailly II does not come across as a wine from a warm year at all.

The 2009 Haut-Batailley is statesmanlike and beautifully defined on the nose with mineral-rich black fruit, Cuban cigar and mint aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, clean and precise yet unequivocally backward and almost surly towards the grippy, saline, mineral-driven finish. The 2014 Haut-Batailley has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, mint and graphite. It is not powerful or showy, much more linear and actually quite discrete. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp blackberry and boysenberry fruit, graphite and cedar, very focused and nicely structured although it clearly requires several years to unfurl. But it conveys energy right on the finish that bodes well for the future. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

There’s immediate appeal to the nose and palate. Both are bathed in blackberries and dark plums. The tannins are superbly cut and very long and fresh. The oak chimes in with spicy flavors and bolsters plush grape tannins in a harmonious finish. Try from 2022.

The 2016 Haut-Batailley was tasted from two bottles, the first showing a touch of TCA. The second has an airy and well-defined bouquet of blackberry, graphite and subtle floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and very classic in style, displaying impressive grip. I appreciate the substance toward the finish, and the pencil lead lingering on the aftertaste. This is an outstanding Haut-Batailley. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.
