The 2019 Taillefer has evolved nicely since I tasted it from barrel. On the nose, vivacious brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, allspice and cedar aromas vie for attention. The 2020 Taillefer was tasted from two bottles. I must confess that the first left me scratching my head and did not rate it. The second is cleaner and more focused on the nose with blackberry, briary and light tertiary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine tannins and well-judged acidity. Ah…this is much more like it. Not long, but its precision really develops nicely in the glass. My score is based on the second bottle.Inc. GSTSG$602.55 -

A fabulous wine, and one of the two greatest Talbots of the last 50 years, this wine still has a very murky garnet/plum/purple color and a spectacular nose of sweet creme de cassis intermixed with freshly ground pepper, melted road tar, herbes de Provence, and beef blood. It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. Last tasted, 6/02.Inc. Some evolution at the rim. Hint of vegetation (moss?) on the nose. Smooth texture, big and bold, but definitely teenage and unformed – not yet evolved. I would wait for this to mature.
