The complexity and depth is fantastic in this beautifully crafted, refined red. Such poise, finesse and length. Yet dense and very compacted. Love the texture precision. Goes on and on. Best ever?

  • Phelan Segur 2020 (12x37.5cl)
    (12x37.5cl) 2020

    Vinous - Neal Martin (96)

The 2020 Phélan Ségur has a very well-defined and seductive bouquet. There's real complexity here, with ebullient red fruit, crushed stone and dried rose petal scents, revealing more graphite aromas with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, harmonious and poised, with very fine tannins, a keen line of acidity and a very svelte and persistent finish. This is a wine that seems unaware of just how good it is. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

  • Phelan Segur 2021 (12x37.5cl)

    Decanter (94)

One of the absolute standouts for me this year. A dark and brooding nose with purity and concentration. The palate is finely textured with mineral-laced tannins that give grip in the mouth but letting the nuances of fruit and acidity play out in harmony. I love the intensity, it's rich but perfectly executed - elegant and finessed with balance and charm but above all a sense of energy and freshness that makes it one of the more memorable wines. Despite the challenges of the vintage, the fruit is ripe and dense and this gives no drop in the mid palate, sustaining pace and directness from start to finish. This is the first time to have such high percentages of both Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Petit Verdot (4%) in the blend. A gorgeous wine that has such promise. A surefire must buy and what should be great value too. Tasted twice and both times this was delicious with exceptional freshness and longevity.

    (12x75cl) 2023

    James Suckling (96-97)

The polish and intensity of this wine is beautiful for the vintage, with blackcurrant, lead pencil and light chocolate character. It’s medium- to full-bodied with well-integrated fruit and tannins, and a long finish. Velvet texture. Excellent potential. Fermented from selected yeast from the various parcels. 58% cabernet sauvignon, 39% merlot, 1.5% petit verdot, and 1.5% cabernet franc. Let’s see which is better in the end, 2022 or 2023.

  • Pibran 2006 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (88)

The 2006 Pibran has a surprisingly sumptuous bouquet of raspberry coulis and blackberry scents mixed with vanilla. It is much more precocious than anticipated. The palate has a smooth texture and a touch of dark chocolate infusing the black fruit, and there is a discreet lactic element on the finish. This is a very good wine for a 2006, although the oak feels a little prominent after so much time in bottle. Tasted at the Pibran vertical at Château Pichon-Baron.

  • Pibran 2017 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2017

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92)

The 2017 Pibran is a juicy, absolutely delicious Pauillac to drink now and over the next decade or so. Sweet tobacco, cedar, licorice, mint and dried cherry add pretty aromatic top notes to round things out. The 2017 is not super complex or structured, but it is a wine of immense pleasure and sensuality. I loved it.
  • Pibran 2019 (12x37.5cl)
    (12x37.5cl) 2019

    Jeb Dunnuck (94)

Lots of cassis, graphite, chalky minerality, and sappy herb notes emerge from the 2019 Château Pibran, a rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated Pauillac. I love its purity of fruit, the balance is spot on, and the tannins, while present, are perfectly ripe and polished. It's not a blockbuster and shows the more elegant style of the vintage, but it's a gorgeous, classy Pauillac that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and have 25+ of prime drinking.

More cassis, earthy blackcurrants, tobacco, and lead pencil notes dominate the 2020 Château Pibran, and it has a more straight, focused, structured style on the palate, with the vintage's freshness and purity front and center. The tannins are ripe and polished, and it has good concentration, nicely integrated oak, and a great finish. It's another terrific wine from this brilliant team. • Pichon Baron 1961 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (86)

After having some mediocre bottles of this wine, the last several times I tasted it, it performed well. Still dark ruby with an orange edge, the 1961 Pichon-Longueville has a big, spicy, damp-earth, cedary bouquet, and rich, fat, substantial flavors that lack the multidimension of the finest 1961s. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 2/88.

    James Suckling (96-97)

Loads of fruit here. Energetic, with layers of tannins. Full-bodied. It builds at the end and opens like a butterfly. Hints of minerals and iron. Best ever? 56% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon, 2% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.

I loved it.

    Jeb Dunnuck (92-94)

More cassis, earthy blackcurrants, tobacco, and lead pencil notes dominate the 2020 Château Pibran, and it has a more straight, focused, structured style on the palate, with the vintage's freshness and purity front and center. The tannins are ripe and polished, and it has good concentration, nicely integrated oak, and a great finish. It's another terrific wine from this brilliant team. The blend is 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 18 months in 50% new French oak.
