Blackcurrants, graphite, crushed stone, and liquid violet notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien), another deeply colored, powerful, full-bodied Saint-Julien. Coming from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has a layered, elegant mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's going to stand with the truly greats from not only this terroir but the entire Médoc.Inc. GSTSG$420.17 -

The 2020 Sarget de Gruaud has a quite a high-toned, floral bouquet with violet and blueberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, fine acidity and just slight peppery notes towards the finish but with very commendable length for a Deuxième Vin. Very fine.Inc. GSTSG$600.37 -

Sarget de Gruaud Larose (St Julien; 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot; tasted, hastily, at the property with Arnaud Frédéric). Like Le Petit Lion, this is a very fine genuine second wine in a vintage in which they are few and far between. Pure, precise, crunchy cassis fruit on the nose and, again, on the palate. This is impressively constructed for a second wine in a difficult vintage. The quality of the tannin management is particularly notable, imparting a lovely svelte texture despite the not inconsiderable density. Brilliantly fresh and nicely balanced on the finish. BravoInc. A fabulous wine, and one of the two greatest Talbots of the last 50 years, this wine still has a very murky garnet/plum/purple color and a spectacular nose of sweet creme de cassis intermixed with freshly ground pepper, melted road tar, herbes de Provence, and beef blood. It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. Last tasted, 6/02.Inc. Some evolution at the rim. Hint of vegetation (moss?) on the nose. Smooth texture, big and bold, but definitely teenage and unformed – not yet evolved. I would wait for this to mature. Still very dry on the finish. Pure cassis and very straightforward. A bit stolid for the moment but it could well mature into something much more interesting.Inc. GSTSG$239.34 -
