I was blown away by the 2017 Vieux Château Mazerat, and you don’t find this level of quality often in 2017. A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, it offers awesome notes of blueberries, crushed rocks, and loamy earth. One of the more full-bodied, opulent efforts out there, it has sweet tannin, moderate acidity, and a great, great finish in a deep, layered, incredibly impressive style. It should drink well for 15+ years.

The 2019 Vieux Château Mazerat might be my favorite wine in the lineup from Jonathan Maltus, and it's just a stunning wine that shows the classic, elegant style of the vintage beautifully. Cassis, black cherries, loamy earth, chalky mineral, and dried flower notes all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is medium to full -bodied, has flawless balance, plenty of silky tannins, and a great, great finish. It's stunning stuff that will benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and cruise for 25-30 years in cold cellars.

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96+)

The 2020 Vieux Château Mazerat reveals a vivid purple hue to go with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, blueberries, scorched earth, and graphite. While Maltus’s Le Dôme gets most of the attention, I continue to just love this wine, and it shines in 2020 with both beautiful fruit and ample structure as well as one heck of a great finish. I’m not sure this will match the 2018 or 2019, but we’re certainly in the same ballpark, with the style being much closer to the more elegant 2019.

Coming from vines just around the next château, the 2021 Vieux Château Mazerat is 90% Merlot (which is more Merlot than usual) and 10% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 80% new oak. It's a gorgeous wine that has notes of ripe red and black fruits mixed with camphor, leather, and spicy tobacco in a medium-bodied, elegant, finesse-driven style that carries lots of minerality.

The 2015 Villemaurine is blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged in 70% new and 30% one-year-old oak barrels for 16 months. Medium garnet-purple in color, it is scented of crushed black cherries, mulberries and blackberry preserves with cedar chest and rose hip hints. Medium to full-bodied with firm, grainy tannins, it's tightly knit with loads of layers and wonderful purity, finishing with great length and depth.

Abundant, ripe cherry and currant fruit, spice box, licorice and sweet tannin represent the inimitable Thunevin style. The wine has an expansive, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and beautiful purity. This is a gorgeous, sexy wine to drink over the next 10-15 years.

The 2016 Virginie de Valandraud is well defined and focused on the nose of blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and rose petal aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very poised and harmonious, and supremely well-assimilated oak toward the poised, persistent finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2017 Virginie de Valandraud is dark and rich in the glass, with a striking interplay of dense fruit and more floral, bright notes from the Cabernets in the blend. The 2017 is a gorgeous, super-expressive wine with a ton of potential. Moreover, the Virginie is a wine of real character.

The 2018 Virginie de Valandraud is superb. Silky, pliant and expressive, the 2018 is wonderfully caressing right out of the gate. Crushed red berry fruit, mocha, spice and new leather all meld together effortlessly. From bottle, the 2018 is more refined and delicate than it was from barrel, and every bit as compelling. The Virginie is made from a collection of unclassed parcels around Valandraud and on the plains below the core holdings.

Mostly Merlot (there's roughly 20% Cabernet Franc), the 2019 Château Valandraud Virginie De Valandraud from the Thunevin team reveals a deep purple hue to go with a brilliant nose of spiced currants, black cherries, new saddle leather, Provençal herbs, and subtle floral nuances. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced on the palate, with gorgeous tannins and a great finish. It's the finest vintage for this cuvée I've tasted, surpassing the 2015, 2016, and 2018. It's going to drink brilliantly for 20 years or more.

The 2020 Virginie de Valandraud is a serious wine endowed with real depth. Broad and ample in feel, it has so much dimension. Bright red berry fruit, spice, rose petal and cedar add an attractive aromatic upper register; I very much like the sense of energy here. Pretty floral and savory notes perk up the finish. All the 2020 needs is a bit of time in bottle. I suspect it will age well based on its brightness.

The second wine of Château Valandraud, the 2021 Virginie De Valandraud is worth seeking out. Ripe red and black fruits, violets, flowers, and a hint of new leather define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a pure, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and supple tannins. It's an outstanding 2021 to drink over the coming decade or so.
