Pessac-Leognan
Located just south of Bordeaux, the Péssac-Léognan AOC is renowned for producing exceptional red and white wines. The area's unique terroir, characterized by gravelly soil, allows for excellent drainage and provides the perfect environment for the cultivation of the region's signature varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for reds and Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon for whites. Château Haut-Brion is amongst the most prestigious First Growth in this appellation. Other renowned wineries in the region include the Super Second Château La Mission Haut-Brion, and the fast ascending Château Smith Haut-Lafitte and Domaine de Chevalier, all of which are known for their exceptional red and white blends.

The 2018 Larrivet Haut-Brion has developed into a gorgeous wine. There is plenty of the tannin I saw in my barrel tastings, and yet all the elements are so well balanced today. Iron, cedar, dried herbs, licorice, dried flowers and mint add striking savory undertones to this deceptively mid weight Pessac-Léognan. The 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion checks in as 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot that spent 16 months in barrel. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a beautifully perfumed, medium to full-bodied, elegant 2022 that has red, blue, and some black fruits, a lifted, floral perfume of incense, smoky tobacco, and blood orange, fine, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and while it's already accessible, it should age beautifully for two decades.Inc. GSTSG$331.84 -

The 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion is terrific, just as it was en primeur. A wine of polish, nuance and delineation, it dazzles from start to finish. Crushed rocks, blood orange, mint and pomegranate soar from the glass. The 2023 exudes purity and nuance, along with a compelling mix of power and finesse.Inc. GSTSG$323.08 -

Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting. The 2012 Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc felt as if it was burdened with too much new oak on the nose, though underneath lie some attractive citrus fruit mixed with peach and apricot skin. I will be optimistic and opine that the oak will be subsumed as long as it is afforded two or three years of cellaring. The palate is well balanced, the new oak lending creaminess and a slight nuttiness - indeed, blind you might almost mistake it for a Meursault. Partly it is because of the new oak, but I can still see how this has wide appeal and you end up being seduced. Tasted January 2016.Inc. GSTSG$469.14 -

The 2018 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc checks in as 75% Sauvignon and 25% Sémillon that was brought up in 25% new French oak. It has a classic (and terrific) nose of honeyed grapefruit, exotic flowers, and a liquid rock-like minerality. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Bordeaux Blanc with a rounded, expansive texture, nicely integrated acidity, terrific overall balance, and a great, dry, crisp finish. It's already drinking nicely, and while I wouldn't push the aging curve, I wouldn't bet against it drinking brilliant for 15 years either. This wasn't a great vintage for the whites, but this is impressive.Inc. GSTSG$470.27 -

The 2015 Latour-Martillac is a powerful, muscular wine. Beams of tannin give the 2015 its potent, brooding personality. Savory herbs, new leather, wild cherry, smoke and kirsch get an extra kick of intensity from bright acids and pointed yet well-integrated tannins. Today, the 2015 is a bit reticent and tightly wound, but that should be less of an issue with more time in bottle.Inc. GSTSG$381.06 -
