Bordeaux 2022 En Primeur - All Wines

Bordeaux 2022 will be remembered as yet another year of significant climatic challenge and masterful viticultural response. Following our tastings and meetings in Bordeaux, we can say with confidence that there were several outstanding wines produced in Bordeaux during 2022. Like 2021 before it, 2022 was characterised by some extreme weather events. This time, it was intense sunlight and drought-like conditions that challenged the estates. In the modern era of Bordeaux, understanding of terroir, vineyard management and winemaking skill of the great and the good of the region can adapt to climatic challenges like never before. It is because of this that growing seasons such as 2022 can produce such an array of magical wines – where previously these weather events could have proved problematic, today they are embraced and managed with deft skill by the finest Châteaux in the region.

A blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon, the 2022 Carbonnieux Blanc evokes notes of boxwood, white flowers, spices, confit citrus and pear mingled with dominant Sauvignon Blanc-inflected notes. The 2022 Château De Fonbel is more rounded and layered, with beautiful cassis and black cherry fruits intermixed with chocolaty herbs, graphite, and crushed stone. This ripe, textured, medium to full-bodied 2022 has beautiful tannins and outstanding length. I like it today, and it should have 10-12 years, if not slightly longer, of prime drinking.

  • Chateau Le Prieure 2022 (1x75cl)

The 2022 Le Prieuré, the first vintage overseen by the Calon-Ségur team, offers a more outgoing and opulent bouquet than its stablemate Vray Croix de Gay, with scents of blackberry, potpourri and light tobacco that barrel maturation has tempered. The palate features fine-boned tannins and a fresh, linear style, eschewing the warmth of the vintage and feeling sapid toward the finish. This classy Saint-Émilion will age well in bottle. This is recommended.
