Bordeaux 2022 En Primeur - All Wines

Bordeaux 2022 will be remembered as yet another year of significant climatic challenge and masterful viticultural response. Following our tastings and meetings in Bordeaux, we can say with confidence that there were several outstanding wines produced in Bordeaux during 2022. Like 2021 before it, 2022 was characterised by some extreme weather events. This time, it was intense sunlight and drought-like conditions that challenged the estates. In the modern era of Bordeaux, understanding of terroir, vineyard management and winemaking skill of the great and the good of the region can adapt to climatic challenges like never before. It is because of this that growing seasons such as 2022 can produce such an array of magical wines – where previously these weather events could have proved problematic, today they are embraced and managed with deft skill by the finest Châteaux in the region.

  • L'Extravagant de Doisy Daene 2022 (1x37.5cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)

The 2022 Doisy-Daëne L'Extravagant is decidedly understated in this vintage, surprisingly so. The 2022 is airy in feel, not quite as unctuous or creamy as it can be, but nevertheless compelling. White flowers, pineapple, mint and tangerine peel build with a bit of coaxing as the 2022 starts to fill out in the mid-palate, showing its textural resonance and total class. L'Extravagant is a total show-stopper.

  • La Chenade 2022 (12x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (94)

The 2022 Château La Chenade checks in as 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that comes from nine hectares of vines and was brought up in 30% new French oak. Bight black cherries, a hint of cassis, graphite, and flowers all emerge from the glass, and it's beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, and has a silky, graceful, yet still classic 2022 style.
  • La Clotte 2022 (1x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The 2022 Château La Clotte is another serious wine in the lineup. Mulled black cherries, liquid violets, spicy wood, and smoky, chocolaty nuances are just some of this wine’s nuances, and it's medium full-bodied, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, silky tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's one hell of a gorgeous Saint-Emilion that deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for two decades.

    (12x75cl) 2022

    Wine Advocate (100)

The 2022 La Conseillante is just as exquisite in bottle as it was en primeur. Wafting from the glass with an exotic bouquet of mulberries, black raspberries and plums mingled with notions of black truffle, burning embers, violets, mint and licorice, it's full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with a fleshy, even unctuous core of fruit underpinned by a broad chassis of sweet, powdery and perfectly integrated tannin. This is the most lavish, sensual La Conseillante of the last decade, with the most texture and density, yet it remains unerringly precise and harmonious. It's a blend of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc.

  • La Croix du Casse 2022 (6x75cl)

The La Croix Du Casse 2022 is a delightful harmony of elegance and intensity. This Bordeaux wine is meticulously crafted in the Pomerol appellation, traditionally vinified and aged in French oak barrels. The producer, an affiliate of the esteemed Borie-Manoux family, boasts a rich history in wine culture spanning multiple generations. Situated on the right bank of the Dordogne, the vineyard enjoys the region's favourable clay-peat soil, resulting in a robust Merlot blend with complexities of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The robust complexity of the La Croix Du Casse 2022 renders a tasting palate of dark fruit notes balanced with rich cocoa and licorice nuance. The wine exhibits a deep garnet hue, signifying its maturity and full-bodied character. With its robust tannic structure and moderate acidity, it pairs splendidly with rich meats and creamy cheeses. Experience the opulence of La Croix Du Casse 2022, a representation of Pomerol's fine winemaking tradition.

  • La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet 2022 (6x75cl)
  • La Dominique 2022 (12x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The 2022 Château La Dominique might be the finest I've tasted from this estate. Located in the northern part of Saint-Emilion, not far from Cheval Blanc as well as the Pomerol border, with plenty of clay in the soils, it's based on 88% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, raised in 50% new barrels. Gorgeous darker currant and black cherry fruit, chocolate, leafy herbs, and a Pomerol-like damp earth character all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has incredible purity, silky tannins, and a great finish. It's a gorgeously textured, seamless, balanced Saint-Emilion that already offers pleasure yet has a solid two decades of prime drinking ahead of it. Bravo.

    Decanter (98)

A clear stand out in 2022 with so much promise. Bright and energetic, quite lean in terms of tannic structure but straight and not austere or raw, maintains a clear direction with detail and definition all the way through. Nothing seems too much, great energy and focus with cool black and blue fruits, a salty minerality and toasted liquorice. Delicate almost, such refinement given the core of power and concentration but so delicately presented you'd almost think it wasnt there. This takes some time to reveal its layers in the glass, opening up slowly with the ripe fruit, and sense of verticality coming in after a few minutes. I love the sculpting but it's how this wine opens and grows that is so compelling. It's so enormously powerful, but so well caged right now, pure, clean, crisp, soft, chalky, intense and cool. A fabulous wine.

The 2022 La Gaffelière is fantastic, but it has also closed down considerably post-bottling. Supremely elegant and perfumed, the 2022 is an absolutely stunning wine. Blood orange, pomegranate, spice, white pepper, dried herbs and all sorts of floral overtones soar from the glass. The Franc is so impressive here. I don't expect this magical Saint-Émilion to be ready any time soon. Today, it is a wine of dazzling complexity and purity for the cellar.

    James Suckling (95-96)

Very fine and polished with sweet tobacco and chocolate with green olives. Currants. Medium-bodied with fine and polished tannins with a lovely length. Friendly nature to this. Turns slightly salty. 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc.
  • La Croix de St-Georges 2022 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (94)

A pure Merlot-based Pomerol, the 2022 Château La Croix Saint Georges offers rocking notes of plums, black cherries, leafy herbs, and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, round, and lush, it has a beautifully textured and polished profile that’s perfect for drinking over the coming decade or so. Count me impressed – this is a smoking good Pomerol I’d be thrilled to drink.

Bravo.

  • La Fleur-Petrus 2022 (1x75cl)

  • La Gaffeliere 2022 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (99)

The 2022 La Gaffelière is fantastic, but it has also closed down considerably post-bottling. Supremely elegant and perfumed, the 2022 is an absolutely stunning wine. Blood orange, pomegranate, spice, white pepper, dried herbs and all sorts of floral overtones soar from the glass. The Franc is so impressive here. I don't expect this magical Saint-Émilion to be ready any time soon. Today, it is a wine of dazzling complexity and purity for the cellar.

  • La Gravette de Certan 2022 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (93)

Coming from 100% Merlot (all the Cabernet Franc went to the Grand Vin), the 2022 La Gravette De Certan comes from younger vines and spent 18 months in 50% new French oak. It's a forward, sexy second wine that has a ripe, voluptuous style in its red and black fruits, truffly earth, camphor, and flowery incense. Beautiful textured and medium to full-bodied, with solid, polished tannins and terrific overall balance, it's perfect for drinking any time over the coming 15 years or so.

This is long and fresh with a linear feeling to the rich fruit, showing plums, redcurrants and spices, with chocolate and walnuts. Medium to full body. Fine tannins. This is the first year being certified biodynamic from Demeter and furthermore, La Lagune is always excellent in hot years.
