The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is a real stunner. Despite an overall impression of femininity and understatement, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is simply dazzling. Sweet, floral and open-knit, the 2012 is nevertheless holding quite a bit back in potential. When I visited Kapcsándy during the 2012 harvest the enthusiasm was very high. This wine shows why. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard has a Mission Haut-Brion-on-steroids character, as it seems to be all gravel pit. Loads of wet pebbles, graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit, a full-bodied opulence, and just a killer, skyscraper-like mouthfeel and stunning finish make for one of the most provocative and fabulous wines in this portfolio. The second perfect score I have given to a Hobbs Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (the other was the 2002), the 2013 is as spectacular as his 2002 was. There are 638 cases of this massive wine that comes across like a first-growth Pauillac. Lead pencil shavings, cedar wood, blueberry and blackberry liqueur as well as hints of forest floor and tobacco leaf are all present in this fragrant, sumptuously textured, full-bodied, massively rich yet sensationally well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a finish of well over 55 seconds. This is amazing work, and interestingly, I believe Hobbs was the first to offer a Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon.Inc. The Racines Sta. Rita Hills Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017 is a pure expression of its grand terroir. Originating from the esteemed Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in California's Central Coast, it is a product of the meticulous craftsmanship of four winemakers - Justin Willett, Étienne de Montille, Brian Sieve and Rodolphe Péters. Creating a harmonious blend of New and Old World techniques, the grape clusters are meticulously treated, fermented whole-cluster, and aged for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels. The result is a balanced, nuanced Pinot Noir that embodies the unique, mineral-driven character of Sta. Rita Hills. It boasts a deep ruby colour, with a bouquet of red fruit, florals and spices. On the palate, it offers flavours of wild berries and cherries, underscored by earthy undertones and subtle oak spice. Elegant and complex, the Racines Sta. Rita Hills Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017 is a must-try for discerning wine connoisseurs.

Possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage is Shafer’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. Last year I thought it was a strong effort, but it’s even better now that it’s been bottled. With an opaque black/purple color and notes of subtle burning charcoal embers, blueberry, blackberry and graphite, the wine has a certain Bordelais minerality, but then the richness of Napa kicks in. It’s full-bodied (somewhat unusual for a 2011) with lighter tannins, and no doubt the wine will be on a faster evolutionary track than vintages such as 2010, 2012 and 2013. Nevertheless, the Shafers and Elias said this was the toughest vintage they’d ever experienced. To be able to produce a compelling wine like this is a testament to their extraordinary skills and craftsmanship. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15-20 years.Inc. GSTSG$4,815.36
