I was blown away by the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon DVO, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc made as a collaboration between the team at Dalla Valle and Ornellaia. Remarkable notes of red and black currants, spring flowers, lead pencil, loamy earth, and classy oak all emerge from this young yet amazingly balanced, seamless Cabernet. Full-bodied on the palate and perfectly balanced, with silky tannins, it will probably be as good as it gets with 7-8 years of bottle age and is a magical Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that will evolve for 30 years or more.

  • El Enemigo Gran Enemigo Agrelo 2019 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (97)

A spicy cabernet franc full of red fruit, iodine, wet stones, white pepper and oyster shells. Full-bodied but nicely austere on the palate with chalky tannins and a linear finish. Tannins are super tight yet tense and dissolved. Mineral-driven finish. 50% whole bunch. Drink or hold.

  • El Enemigo Gran Enemigo El Cepillo 2019 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98+)

The layered and complex 2019 Gran Enemigo El Cepillo Single Vineyard has an expressive nose with a mixture of curry, nutmeg, aromatic herbs and dried flowers, perfumed and expressive. The vineyard was planted in 2000 with Cabernet Franc and some 15% Malbec that fermented in concrete and a 2,000-liter oak vat with indigenous yeasts and with 50% full clusters. This bottling is always very distinct, with incredible aromatics, a medium to full-bodied palate, 13.5% alcohol and very good freshness. It's vibrant and finishes dry and with a salty twist. 7,200 bottles were filled in July 2020.

  • El Enemigo Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 2019 (1x150cl)

    James Suckling (100)

A complex, restrained and deliciously austere cabernet franc with damp earth, oyster shells, blueberries, thyme, rosemary and mushrooms. Super serious and chalky on the palate with lots of dissolved, minerally-textured tannins. Very long and uncompromising! An incredible cabernet franc from Gualtallary by Alejandro Vigil. Extremely pure, mineral and seductive. A fabulous cabernet franc that grows on the palate with remarkable tension and texture. I’d want to drink a bottle now even it can hold extremely well.

  • El Enemigo Gran Enemigo Torrontes 2019 (3x75cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (95)

We want to change perceptions of Torrontés,” says Alejandro Vigil, who sources this chiselled, almost Rheingau Riesling-like white from a seven-year-old pergola at 1,600 metres in Gualtallary. Mineral-edged, taut and refined, with lime and white flower notes, stony intensity and thrilling palate length.

  • El Porvenir Alto Los Cuises Malbec 2019 (3x75cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (96)

This incredible, isolated site produces one of my favourite Malbecs, not just in the north but also in the whole of Argentina. Pepper, savoury and intense, with expertly handled second and third-use oak, suave tannins, notes of bramble and red berry fruit and long, balanced, nuanced finish. Superb winemaking. 2022-31

  • Erath Pinot Noir 2019 (12x75cl)

Delight your palate with the exquisite Erath Pinot Noir 2019, impeccably crafted in the verdant vines of Oregon's Willamette Valley. As a pioneering wine firm founded by Dick Erath in the 1960s, Erath Winery has cornered the market with its mastery of Pinot Noir varietals. The 2019 vintage is a prime example, made from handpicked grapes given a cold soak before being fermented in small, open-top fermenters to preserve flavour and complexity.

An art of winemaking involving precise temperature control and gentle pump-overs across 10 days imbues this wine with its enchanting characteristics. The resultant beauty is aged in a balanced blend of new and old French Oak barrels, producing a wine that shimmers with a ruby hue. Sublime notes of red cherries, cranberries, and earthy undertones are evident on the nose, followed by supple tannins and a lingering finish on the palate. The Erath Pinot Noir 2019 is a symphony in a glass, ready to accompany your finest meals.

  • Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a straightforward, easygoing effort. The Far Niente Cabernets typically show a bit more depth and creaminess, but the 2019 comes across a bit light and lacking in depth. Dark red plum, mocha, spice and new leather linger.

North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is in the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency. South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
