  • Opus One 2007 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

There is so much to like about the 2007 Opus One. A wine that captures the essence of the year, the 2007 is exotic, flashy and striking. Kirsch, rose petals, pomegranates and spices form a fabric of compelling beauty. The 2007 is rich, sumptuous and generous, just as it should be. Threads of striking perfume are woven throughout, adding aromatic lift and pure sensuality. Readers who like more structured wines are likely to gravitate towards vintages such as 2010, but years like 2007 offer immense pleasure and an immediacy I find impossible to resist. A sumptuous, layered finish rounds things out in stunning style. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec.

  • Opus One 2008 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

A gorgeous wine, the 2008 Opus One is just beginning to enter its first plateau of maturity. The tannins have softened while the aromatics show lovely complexity as well as depth. Blueberry, blackberry, gravel, lavender, licorice, leather and dark spice notes all add character. The 2008 is an especially dark, somber Opus One, although the softening tannins make the wine approachable today. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec.

  • Opus One 2009 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (94+)

The 2009 Opus One is impeccable. It brings together the silkiness of the 2007 with the power and darkness of the 2008, a combination that is hugely appealing, to say the least. With a little air, the 2009 can be enjoyed young, but it is best cellared for at least a few years, which will allow some of the baby fat to drop off. The blend is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 1% Malbec.

  • Opus One 2010 (3x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (98)

The 2010 Opus One is on another level and is a deep, concentrated, full-bodied, flawlessly balanced beauty. From a cooler vintage that saw significant heat spikes later in the year, it has incredible purity in its cassis and darker fruits as well as leafy tobacco, flowers, and background oak. With a great mid-palate, ripe, building tannins, and full-bodied richness on the palate, it’s a brilliant wine that has another two decades or more of prime drinking.

I love the 2012, but honestly the 2013 just has the edge, because it is just as concentrated and full of fruit but acidity and floral nuance balances out the richness. Dark deep rosemary spice and black olive paste deepens the flavours through the mid-palate and you just have to hang on as this goes spiralling through, drawing the flavours out to a lengthy finish. 2% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 18 days skin contact.

  • Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon 2002 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Bright, clear medium ruby with a healthy rim. Darker on the nose than the 2001 bottling, conveying a slightly inky quality to its aromas of cassis, dark cherry, bitter chocolate, mocha and cedar; can't quite match the '01 for floral lift. Rich and suave in the mouth, with cassis, blueberry and licorice flavors complicated by a hint of herbs and lifted by a violet topnote. If this wine doesn't show quite the uniform ripeness, elegance or definition of the '01, it's larger-scaled. Its substantial tannins are also more apparent today, but with so much baby fat, they may yet be absorbed. Hobbs described 2002 as a muscular year for Cabernet, noting that he was the first to pick fruit in this vineyard. Perhaps as a result, this wine avoids the raisiny character shown by some 2002s. • Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon 2007 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

Dark ruby-red. Urgent aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice, menthol and violet. Densely packed, chewy and concentrated but less liqueur-like and thick than a sample I tried two years ago for my 2007 Cabernet horizontal, conveying a slightly inky quality to its vibrant dark berry and floral flavors. Quite juicy, and already displaying a captivating subtle sweetness, but this wine still needs time to unfold and knit. Plenty of baby fat here but the tannins are not yet resolved. (My bottle had already thrown a good bit of sediment.) This youthful wine may yet go in the direction of the superb 2001. Hobbs told me he did substantial crop-thinning in 2007 (his ultimate production was just 2.7 tons per acre), and that he aged this wine entirely in new Taransaud barriques. James Suckling (99)

Extremely perfumed and floral with lavender, lilacs and violets to the sweet, ripe berries, such as blackberries and blackcurrants. Some slate and graphite, too. It’s full-bodied, yet ever so balanced and refined, with super fine tannins that last for minutes. Fresh herbs, such as bay leaf and lemon grass highlight the dark fruit. The quality of tannin is exquisite with wonderful polish and refinement. Lasts for minutes. So wonderful to taste now, but better after 2026.

(14.8% alcohol; 3.72 pH; 5.8 g/l acidity)

(15.2% alcohol; 3.75 pH; 5.5 g/l acidity)

North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is in the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency. South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
