Vinous (91)

Sexy aromas of citrus fruits, oatmeal and smoke. Sweetly spicy in the mouth, with a ripe peach flavor and a seductively supple texture. Very good acidity frames the fruit and extends the finish. (Two other Meursaults were considerably more difficult to taste: A village wine, simply labeled Meursault, was plagued by mercaptan, and despite offering sexy hazelnut and oatmeal flavors and harmonious acidity was impossible to judge. And a Meursault Les Narvaux showed a resiny aroma of Calvados. Madame Bize said the wine was simply too young, and I suppose it's possible that it was going through an oxidative stage.)

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot) is a smaller production release that’s brought up in new and one-year-old French oak. Its inky purple color is followed by a gorgeous bouquet of pure crème de cassis, spicy oak, graphite, and hints of espresso, as well as just a touch of chalky minerality. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it brings ripe tannins, a great mid-palate, and one heck of a finish. It's a big, structured, Howell Mountain-like Cabernet Sauvignon that will be long-lived.

Wine Advocate (100)

This wine merits every one of these 100 points. The 2001 Vin Santo di Montepulciano Occhio di Pernice (375 milliliters) is a singular work of art and a profound expression of Tuscany. I know Avignonesi owner Virginie Saverys would like to draw attention to the other wines in her portfolio, and she has every right to do so. But I just want to cry. When you have a wine as profound and perfect as this, everything else fades fast into the background. Virginie likes to say that Occhio di Pernice (made with red grapes) is the male and the Vin Santo di Montepulciano (made from white grapes) is the female. This is a great observation. The bouquet here is smoky and savory, but brilliant and sophisticated at the same time. You get an infinite array of caramel, maple syrup, espresso bean, licorice and candied fruit aromas. There's so much dried fig as well. The concentration and thickness is out of this world. This wine is built like a tank and I'm not sure it will ever exit its drinking prime.

Emanating from the verdant vineyards of Tuscany, the Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano Occhio di Pernice 2005 is an elegant embodiment of Italian winemaking expertise. This liquid amber produced by the esteemed Avignonesi winery is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes that are carefully handpicked and naturally dried on straw mats. Following maturation in wooden caratelli barrels for ten mesmerising years, it emerges as a rich, luxurious dessert wine with exceptional bouquet and depth. Notes of dried fig, candied orange peel and cloves entwine with delicate hints of almond and honey, all harmoniously balanced by an exhilarating acidity. This exquisite wine beckons with a lingering finish that rouses the senses. Regarded as one of the best vintages, the 2005 Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano Occhio di Pernice is a true collector's item. Savour this usually limited fine wine in the comfort of your home or elevate special celebrations into memorable affairs.
