Wine Advocate (91)Based on 75% Pinot Meunier, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir (30- to 60-year-old vines, mainly picked in 2011), the NV Origin'elle is a pretty good representative of both the plantings on the biodynamically farmed 8.4 hectares; these vineyards are located in the most western part of the Marne valley. The wine is made in the special style of Françoise Bedel and her son Vincent, whose wines are kept on the lees for almost one year (in this case in enameled tanks). Straw-golden in color and clear and aromatic on the intense and pretty rich nose, this is a full and round, yet delicate and silky textured fizz. It has a long and aromatic finish. Although the wine seems to be rich and fat at first, it is in fact full-flavored but pure and finesse-full. The finish is clear and fresh, and reveals a nice mineral grip. This is an excellent Champagne as an aperitif, but also with food. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (88-90)The 2019 Frank Phélan is a very pretty, supple second wine that will drink well upon release. Vinous - Neal Martin (87)The 2020 Frank Phélan, which will be released in 2023, has a well-defined nose, hints of black olive tinging the black fruit with raspberry and mulberry surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft opening, quite rounded and fleshy, perhaps missing a little tension on the finish. As such, it's an early-drinking Saint-Estèphe that should give several years' drinking pleasure. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (88-90)The 2019 Frank Phélan is a very pretty, supple second wine that will drink well upon release. Inky dark fruit, licorice, spice, tobacco, dried herbs, lavender and mint all meld together in this supple, mid-weight Saint-Estèphe. There is plenty to like here. All the 2019 needs is élevage to soften the tannins. |

The Real Review (96)Really pale and youthful in the glass with plenty of steely green hues. Slatey and minerally on the nose, there's also citrus blossom, lime zest and a touch of melon skin. Flavours are focused and precise, there's lashings of lemony, limey goodness, a lick of wet stone along with a bright and crunchy acidity that gives great drive and length to the wine. A super expression of riesling. |
