The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 60% whole bunches. It comes from three plots that, still, only made two and a half barrels this year. It has a very well defined bouquet that seems to blossom in the glass, although it will need some time for the stems to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very peppery in style with touches of white pepper and bay leaf towards the persistent finish. This is a classy wine, one that is not unlike Dujac’s Echézeaux!

Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Echézeaux Grand Cru saw some protection with candles in the vineyard during frost, though still there was partial loss. The nose opens with redcurrant and light blueberry scents, a touch of incense. The 30% stems is neatly integrated. The palate is well balanced with fine grip, quite taut and linear, chalky, building towards quite a tensile finish though maybe without quite the sustain of the very best examples from this Grand Cru. Yet it is still a very capable Echézeaux that will deliver the goods for 15 to 20 years.

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)

The 2021 Fixin Les Arvelets 1er Cru offers simple, slightly rustic brambly red fruit on the nose intermixed with damp loamy undergrowth scents. I appreciate the harmony here. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry. Dark red berry fruit (cranberry and raspberry) dovetails into a peppery, slightly viscous finish. Quite bold for the vintage and well crafted. It would not surprise me if this gives 15+ years' drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Burghound (90)

This is aromatically similar to the Les Crais though with the addition of a discreet dollop of wood. There is a bit more volume and power to the medium-bodied flavors that flash ample minerality on the moderately austere finale that delivers first-rate depth and persistence. This excellent and ageworthy effort is a classic Fixin and very much worth your interest.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)

5 Star Wine. Bright ruby purple. A bouquet of superb energy, this is startlingly fine. Lifted fresh red berries, not shocked by the recent bottling. Beautifully scented fruit on the palate with a fine long finish. Medium plus intensity, beautifully fresh. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted Nov 2024.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Fixin Les Clos comes from tank and was filtered two days prior my visit. Darker fruit compared to the Fixin Village, this is still well defined with light violet aromas percolating up with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, slightly granular in texture with a closed finish that somehow still manages to convey a sense of energy. Good potential.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of three parcels, though 50% is Au Combe de Dessus. With 20% new oak, it has an attractive wild strawberry and red plum bouquet. Impressive focus. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-tuned tannins, quite vibrant and lively, orange rind and touches of black pepper furnishing the finish. Give this a year or two in bottle.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91)

Combes du Dessus has been assembled into this in 2023. A denser bright purple. The nose is less immediately forthcoming, but there is greater weight of fruit, richer raspberry towards the back of the palate yet with good acidity. The two plots do indeed complement each other. Just bottled. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a more introspective bouquet than its peers, with Lapsang Souchong infusing the well-defined raspberry fruit and hints of loam. The palate is well balanced, quite structured and grainy in texture. This is certainly more reductive in style, with blacker fruit possibly indicating more extraction in the winery. Yet it retains balance and has a spicy, almost Oriental hoisin-like freshness towards the finish. Sophisticated for sure, but it needs two or three years in bottle. The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village is more backward on the nose compared to the Fixin: blackberry, undergrowth and touch of wilted iris petal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This feels lithe and sensual, the oak neatly integrated with a silky smooth finish. This should be a peach once in bottle.

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village has an attractive nose with quite generous red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, hints of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, tensile and citrus-fresh with an orange peel infused finish. Very fine.
