The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Le Vieux Donjon is a beautifully balanced, classic expression of the appellation, as well as this estate. It has a vivid purple hue, with ripe berry fruits, peppery herbs, floral, and sandalwood-like aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, it’s seamless and elegant on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins and a great finish. This is a brilliant wine that’s already drinking well but will evolve gracefully over the next 15-20 years.Inc. GSTSG$927.37 -

Coming from three terroirs with chalky soils, the 2017 Champagne Millésime Abyss Brut Zero is always equal parts Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay, and following disgorgement, this wine was rested in the ocean off the coast of Brittany for 10 months at 60 meters below the surface. It opens to beautiful aromas of saline layers and fresh croissant, as well as notes of honeydew melon and fresh flowers. Medium-bodied, it has a delicate mousse, a balanced feel, and a chalky finish, with long persistence and a profound texture. Drink 2024-2044. 2 grams per liter of dosage.Inc. GSTSG$1,479.70 -

One of a handful of single vineyard châteaux in Champagne, now being made by Leclerc-Briant (although they are not owners). Crisp, clean, touches of green apple on the nose but there is weight behind this and it opens to show plenty of quince, hazlenut, biscuit and flaky pastry character, not quite as far as brioche at this point although it will develop over the next few years. The first wine to be released under the new regime, with Hervé Jestin chef de cave, as for Leclerc-Briant (he was in fact already making wine here under the previous owners). Ageing in neutral oak casks, biodynamic viticulture. 2.5ha of vines, 12%abv. Tasted twice, loved it both times, powerful depth of flavour. Brut zero (2g/l dosage), Blanc de Blancs, 100% Grand Cru.Inc. GSTSG$411.93 -

The mousse is so soft and plentiful that the entire thing almost melts away in your mouth. Just an excellent Champagne that has real character, more minerality than fruit, moving towards saffran and quince. A more challenging vintage in Champagne than the 2012, but this has the charm that comes with bottle age, with a grilled almond edge, still with citrus and white flower undertones. Beautiful. The 2020 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is the product of a warm, dry, low-yielding year. The wines are tannic and structural on the whole, and this is no exception. In the mouth, the tannins define the fruit characters, and they frame them, providing chew and shape, along with notes of raspberry, nori, iodine, blood, kelp, cassis, bramble and just a hint of forest floor. Here, in the context of Leeuwin Art Series Cabernets, the wine is tannic. But I vividly recall seeing this wine in an international blind tasting of the 2020 Cabernet vintage and observing that in that context, this same wine looked pure as the driven snow. Context, as they say, is everything.Inc. GSTSG$168.85 -

Let's put it this way. This is the closest I have come to awarding a wine 100 points...Stellar wine from a stellar vintage. The remarkable this is that this is a wine 100 percent barrel fermented in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for 11 months - and it certainly doesn't taste excessive, or even slightly oak. It has such high-fidelity purity with complex seductive aromatics of vanilla bean and light oatmeal with a cutting minerality and spicy lift. But the palate, oh the palate. This is where things start to explode. Power, poise and persistence with a dry savouriness balancing the intense ripe fruit. It is such a long finish with an ever so slightly, charry finish completing a remarkable wineInc. GSTSG$1,489.94 -

In many ways the most Burgundian of any of the Leeuwin releases, this will rank up there with the best to date. There’s a waxy light mealy aroma which picks up nuances of limestone and spice with a trace of grapefruit. But it is the palate that really distinguishes it. There is an austerity with the minerally chalky feel that cuts through the fruit extending to a finish of extraordinary length. Precision and focus harness a wine of great power and poise before dry savoury edges lift the finish.Inc. GSTSG$1,451.79 -

It would not surprise me if this was considered the greatest Leeuwin chardonnay yet. You would get no argument from me... there is elegance and power here. Subtle layered wine. It was a year of great concentration and power. Has pear and lime character that is part of the DNA. The fruit is generous, especially about the mid palate. Has a subtle and not overstated flinty character with a lift of spice. The oak is brilliantly managed and complementary. It's very tight and precise and the whole-bunch technique gives it that stalky, phenolics character. There's a savoury almond meal character on the finish. Incredible length and power here. The minerally character on the finish is quite pronounced. In the top three, certainly, of any Leeuwin chardonnay.Inc. GSTSG$2,732.54 -

Shiraz is on the move in Margaret River as evidenced by this delightful release from the 2019 Art Series. Beautiful vibrant primary fruit characters here. Smooth, integrated and seamless. There is a juicy character but it's quite tight and controlled with a precise and detailed finish. Shiraz has gone through a remarkable reincarnation after being pulled out in 1980 in favour of sauvignon blanc. Thankfully it's now part of a renewed focus.
