  • Hugel Gewurztraminer Grossi Laue 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

Pure, bright yellow with golden tinges. Very pure aromas and flavors of rose petal, lime, crystallized ginger and brown spices. Hints of smoked beef and aromatic herbs add nuance to the palate, complicating flavors of orange marmalade and spicy herbs. Finishes with excellent length and so much acidity it makes your teeth hurt. I couldn’t get over just how high in acid these 2014 Hugel Gewürzes seemed to be (Gewürz is a notoriously low-acid variety) and Marc Hugel told me that in fact, for no clear reason, these wines had more or less the same acidity levels as the 2010s (2010 is, along with 2008, one of the highest-acid vintages in Alsace memory).

  • Hugel Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles 2005 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

In its very early days, Hugel’s 2005 Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles is already truly noble! Orange marmalade, caramelized peach, spiced pear and yellow plum preserves, cinnamon and mint candies, roses, and honey and white raisin fill the nose. Spectacularly luscious and expansive on the palate, honeyed, silken-textured, and loaded with primary, vividly juicy fruit such as one seldom encounters in this grape variety much less at stratospheric ripeness, this fills ones head with sweet perfume and dreams of future vinous glory – if only you can give it at least twenty years. And if one must drink it today, despite considerable sweetness, this amazing Gewurztraminer already displays not just prodigious length and profundity of flavor – saline chalky mineral suggestions and deep smoked meat pungency lending a darker side to its performance – but elegance, poise, refinement, and remarkable lift and refreshment.
  • Hugel Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive 2014 (12x37.5cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The golden-yellow colored 2014 Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive is very clear, precise and elegant on the nose that represents a perfect selection of botrytis, but it's also a fruit-fly vintage that always causes a kind of irritation. Ripe peach and sage aromas intertwined with flinty notes on the intense nose lead to a palate that is rich, sweet and savory as well as elegant and saline, finishing highly stimulating despite the richness. Bottled with 11% stated alcohol and 94 grams per liter of residual sugar, this is a long-distance runner. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

    Vinous (96)

The 2014 Riesling Grossi Laüe is harvested from four parcels across the midslope of the marls of the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru. From a cool vintage, with a cool, rainy summer where the autumn made the vintage. This sends out only gentle notions of chamomile tincture with emerging highlights of clear honey but with an ethereal lift and a lovely smokiness that allows you to stash this way. The palate is serene, gorgeously smooth and emollient with its cooling, soothing, chamomile-scented, fresh gentleness. This is a Riesling like a caress, like a balm, while cooling, healing and soothing. The 2014 is long and understated, just about opening up but perfectly equipped to go the distance, a wine of equanimity and class. (Bone-Dry)
  • Hugel Riesling Jubilee 2000 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

Stony, complex nose features white flowers, mint, quinine, lemon and lime. Rich and dense, with a dusty sense of minerality. As stony as this riesling is, it not at all hard. Finishes very long, with a whiplash of flavor. This comes across as dryer than the Tradition even though it's carrying a few more grams of sugar (10, vs. 7, with the same 13.2% alcohol), due to its stronger mineral character and higher acidity. Will be long-lived.

Hugel's 2014 Riesling Schoelhammer opens with a clear and remarkably fine and herbal bouquet that indicates perfectly ripe and concentrated fruit that is reminiscent of ripe mirabelles. On the palate, this is a rich and textural, very elegant and refined yet highly complex and long-lasting Schoenenbourg that combines power with incredible finesse. The finish is very long, stimulating and complex due to the remarkably fine saline acidity. (the Humberts' vines are situated on rocky soil in the northern section of Mazoyères-Chambertin): Slightly high-toned aromas of black raspberry, currant, rocks and licorice pastille, plus a sexy note of smoky oak. The fattest and sweetest of this 2013 collection, already showing a lot of early personality to its dark fruit and licorice flavors. Turns tougher and stonier on the rather powerful, tannic back end. • Hugel Riesling Schoelhammer 2008 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (96)

A very complex rose petal and herbal riesling that is ridiculously fresh for almost a decade of age. Very muscular and concentrated, but still cool and fresh with enormous mineral depth at the finish. Just coming to its peak, but decades of aging potential!

  • Hugel Riesling Schoelhammer 2011 (6x75cl)

    Decanter (97)

The crown in the Hugel jewels, Schoelhammer comes from 30 rows in the core of Grand Cru Shoenenbourg, high above Riquewihr. An intense, dry and mineral-charged Riesling with floral aromas and concentrated lime/lemon zest flavours. Fermented in neutral oak, this retains absolute purity and clarity of flavour. Bottled in Spring 2012, this vintage was first released in 2018. Still very youthful and with decades ahead.

  • Hugel Riesling Schoelhammer 2014 (6x37.5cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

Hugel's 2014 Riesling Schoelhammer opens with a clear and remarkably fine and herbal bouquet that indicates perfectly ripe and concentrated fruit that is reminiscent of ripe mirabelles. On the palate, this is a rich and textural, very elegant and refined yet highly complex and long-lasting Schoenenbourg that combines power with incredible finesse. The finish is very long, stimulating and complex due to the remarkably fine saline acidity. This is a stellar Riesling from Alsace, and although I didn't taste it along with the great 2010, I dare say this is possibly the finest Schoelhammer Hugel has produced so far. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

  • Humbert Freres Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

(the Humberts' vines are situated on rocky soil in the northern section of Mazoyères-Chambertin): Slightly high-toned aromas of black raspberry, currant, rocks and licorice pastille, plus a sexy note of smoky oak. The fattest and sweetest of this 2013 collection, already showing a lot of early personality to its dark fruit and licorice flavors. Turns tougher and stonier on the rather powerful, tannic back end. I can certainly envision this wine shutting down in the bottle.
