    This wine blew my mind. The 2015 Giorgio Primo is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. I'm told that the percentage of Merlot will increase in 2016 (to a majority role) but will diminish by a large margin in 2017 because that hot vintage was so difficult on early-ripening varieties. The bouquet is nothing short of explosive, with inky black fruit followed by pencil shaving, chalkboard, wet river stone and all the other beautiful mineral notes that I so closely associate with Panzano in Chianti. Giorgio Primo is a baritone Tuscan red with spectacular depth and range to its inner voice. It sings loud and long, and in perfect melody too. It is a real beauty.

The Petit Manseng helps to give more vertical lift to the bouquet. Average annual production for this wine is about 40,000 bottles, but this vintage came in about 8,000 bottles short.

In all, this wine tastes and feels much younger than it really is and I have high hopes for its future aging ability.     This wine always stands out in my mind, and it's worth dedicating a few words as to why. Poggio Valente offers us a rare opportunity to taste Sangiovese made according to the highest standards but from a territory—on the Tuscan Coast—that does not share a big legacy with monovarietal Sangiovese reds. The Fattoria le Pupille 2019 Poggio Valente was born in a happy vintage with a cool spring and a growing season that had plenty of underground water reserves to keep the vines hydrated well until the end of August. This is a full and generous wine with dark cherry and wild plum aromas that segue to tar, licorice and crushed slate. My sample (tasted a few weeks after bottling) was a little shy initially, but it quickly blossomed in the glass.

    Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice.

    This is a truly sumptuous wine that stands as a tall testament to the winemaking talents of Giampaolo Motta, his vision for interpreting this vintage and his specific vineyard site in Panzano in Chianti. This standout wine brings Fattoria la Massa to a new level of accomplishment and opens an exciting new chapter of possibility. The 2013 Giorgio Primo (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) is dark and impenetrable on first impact. The aromas accelerate slowly and grow evenly in power and intensity after a few quick swirls of the glass. The bouquet peels back with dark fruit aromas, baking spice and Mediterranean herb.     This wine blew my mind. The 2015 Giorgio Primo is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. I'm told that the percentage of Merlot will increase in 2016 (to a majority role) but will diminish by a large margin in 2017 because that hot vintage was so difficult on early-ripening varieties. The bouquet is nothing short of explosive, with inky black fruit followed by pencil shaving, chalkboard, wet river stone and all the other beautiful mineral notes that I so closely associate with Panzano in Chianti. Giorgio Primo is a baritone Tuscan red with spectacular depth and range to its inner voice. It sings loud and long, and in perfect melody too. It is a real beauty.

The tannins are beautifully managed, and the wine is long and complex.

Cold temperatures during pressing and the use of stainless steel helps to lock in tropical aromas, minty apple and crushed limestone. The Petit Manseng helps to give more vertical lift to the bouquet. Average annual production for this wine is about 40,000 bottles, but this vintage came in about 8,000 bottles short.

Petit Manseng adds freshness, and the other grapes contribute to a fragrant bouquet that is never cloying or too heavy. The wine walks a careful line between floral aromas, citrus and crushed limestone. There are elegant touches of petroleum jelly that add to the vertical lift of this focused, medium-bodied white.

In all, this wine tastes and feels much younger than it really is and I have high hopes for its future aging ability.     This wine always stands out in my mind, and it's worth dedicating a few words as to why. Poggio Valente offers us a rare opportunity to taste Sangiovese made according to the highest standards but from a territory—on the Tuscan Coast—that does not share a big legacy with monovarietal Sangiovese reds. The Fattoria le Pupille 2019 Poggio Valente was born in a happy vintage with a cool spring and a growing season that had plenty of underground water reserves to keep the vines hydrated well until the end of August. This is a full and generous wine with dark cherry and wild plum aromas that segue to tar, licorice and crushed slate. My sample (tasted a few weeks after bottling) was a little shy initially, but it quickly blossomed in the glass.

    Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice.

    The 1993 is a beguiling, graceful Saffredi laced with plums, prunes, wild herbs, spices and licorice. The French oak confers a level of textural richness and sweetness, but is beautifully balanced in this vintage. At the same time, the 1993 could have been a truly great wine with a more restrained approach to cooperage.

It is another superb effort from proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti.
