(3x150cl) 2012Vinous (93-95)
The Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques takes hold of the palate and never lets up. At once explosive yet inward, the 2012 boasts superb depth and concentration. Today, it comes across as quite raw in its unbridled energy. This should be fabulous once the tannins soften. Sweet, floral notes add an attractive element of lift as the wine opens up in the glass. A wine of volume, the 2012 is going to need at least a few years to come together. Arnaud Mortet gave this fruit a few extra days on the vine to achieve more phenolic ripeness. The results speak for themselves.Inc. GSTSG$3,780.62 -

From 50-year-old vines that usually yield a generous 40 hectoliters per hectare, or thereabouts, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques has a very succinct and focused bouquet with mineral notes interwoven throughout the black cherry, blueberry and iodine scents. The palate is medium-bodied and is showing some of the 60% new oak at the moment, although there is sufficient fruit to absorb it. This has fine symmetry and focus with quite a long, tender finish. This is a sublime Gevrey-Chambertin to enjoy over the ensuing two decades, possibly more.Inc. GSTSG$1,011.30 -

(70% new oak; 15% vendange entier): Deep, bright red. Deep, smoky scents of dark raspberry, game and minerals. Juicy and very intense but youthfully imploded, conveying the sappiness of the vintage in spades. A wonderfully taut, mineral-driven Lavaux with a sappy, saline character to its dark berry fruit. Finishes rich and firmly tannic, with terrific lingering perfume.Inc. GSTSG$2,495.61 -

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques from Domaine Denis Mortet is superb—and further confirmation that this is a wonderful vintage for the Lavaux Saint-Jacques, opening in the glass with a wonderful bouquet of sweet cassis, cherries, rich soil and wood smoke which is still quite youthfully fruit-driven. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and layered, with an authoritative chassis of rich, velvety tannins cloaked in succulent fruit, and a long, sapid finish. This is an ample, even lavish Lavaux Saint-Jacques that nonetheless remains precise and controlled, fully realizing the potential of the vintage.Inc. GSTSG$1,234.77 -

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques was affected by 50% to 60% because of the frost, with 20% whole bunch and 70% new oak. It has a very crystalline bouquet with perfumed dark berry fruit, crushed stone and hints of violet that just deliver stupendous precision. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety smooth entry and great depth, with the new oak nicely integrated, although maybe I might have chucked a few more stems in the vat on the finish? Still, this has great potential, a magnificent Lavaux Saint-Jacques that will dazzle for many years to come.Inc. GSTSG$726.93 -

(Sweet Spot Outstanding) Admirably discreet wood influence can be found on the markedly cooler and more restrained yet wonderfully diverse aromas of various dark berries, plum, violet, leather and whispers of the sauvage. The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru includes one-third whole bunches and one-third new oak. Again, this is elegant and pure on the nose, beautifully defined with a Rousseau-like personality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very expressive yet understated. The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux is all about subtlety and grace. Not quite as juicy as the 1er Cru, the Champeaux is built on a linear, energetic frame. (6x75cl) 2019Vinous (93-95)
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru does not quite have the complexity of the Lavaux on the nose, but it is certainly intense with blackberries, wild hedgerow and touches of salted liquorice developing in the glass. The palate is light on its feet thanks to the very fine tannins that frame the predominant red fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. This is very well structured on the finish and possesses the length of the Lavaux. This is very impressive and it should age supremely well in bottle, perhaps the dark horse of Mortet's 2019s.Inc. The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is all about deep sensuality and plushness in the fruit. Blackberries, blueberries, flowers, licorice and spices are woven together beautifully in this bright, highly expressive Gevrey. The 1er Cru has more than enough stuffing to stand up to the new oak, which is 60-65% in this vintage, lower than it has been in the past. (vinified with 25% whole clusters): Good medium red. Red fruits, spices and warm earth tones on the inviting nose. Creamy, sweet and pliant in the middle, with a touch of stony minerality to brace the red fruit and spice flavors. (aging in 30% new oak, vs. 60% in 2011): Saturated bright red with ruby highlights. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, minerals, violet and spices. Rich and broad but with a light touch; in a spicy, very elegant style, with lovely inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with substantial tannins, noteworthy persistence and a distinct minty reserve.Inc. GSTSG$325.80 -
Vinous (92)
Bright, dark red. Superripe-verging-on-liqueur-like but with lovely perfumed lift to its cherry, red berry and dark chocolate aromas. Wonderfully dense, sappy, concentrated wine with serious medicinal reserve and surprising framing acidity to its deep core of dark fruit, mineral and spice flavors. As ripe as this is, it does not pass into surmaturité. Finishes with substantial ripe, dusty tannins and terrific length. A splendid village wine with the density and depth to age.Inc. GSTSG$1,026.21

(1x75cl) 2012Vinous (91-93)
(aging in 30% new oak, vs. 60% in 2011): Saturated bright red with ruby highlights. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, minerals, violet and spices. Rich and broad but with a light touch; in a spicy, very elegant style, with lovely inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with substantial tannins, noteworthy persistence and a distinct minty reserve. In BondSG$289.00 -
A splendid village wine with the density and depth to age.In BondSG$890.00
