The 2002 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is an outstanding expression of both vineyard and vintage. It has a stunning, exquisitely defined bouquet with pure, ethereal red cherry and crushed strawberry scents infused with crushed stone aromas, later incense and potpourri. The palate is beautifully defined with filigree tannin, elegant yet delivering the concentration you expect from Bachelet's ancient vines. There is nigh perfect acidity here and it fans out in consummate style on the effortless finish. This is a gem! Tasted at the Gevrey-Chambertin lunch at China Tang in Hong Kong.Inc. GSTSG$2,162.46 -
Wine Advocate (96-97)
The 2005 Charmes-Chambertin (from 80-year-old, tiny-berried, tiny-clustered vines in the core Charmes) is destined to become one of the benchmarks of this great vintage as well as of Bachelet’s career. Too bad there will only be around 200 cases! A gorgeous nose of black cherry, blackberry, violets, rowan berry and licorice leads to a deeply black-fruited, expansive, satin-textured palate with undertones of bitter black chocolate, bitter-sweet roasted nuts, chalk, and iodine. (The iodine lends these black fruits a slightly medicinal aspect – and what wouldn’t this cure, I wonder?!). This Charmes exhibits amazing density and low-toned flavors in combination with lift, elegance and persistently engaging primary fruit juiciness. The carnal side of Pinot is entirely sublimated for now and the tannins so fine as to melt into the background. Save this for 2020 or beyond, please!Inc. GSTSG$1,944.46 -

Ruby-red. Captivating aromas of black fruits, vanilla, smoked meat and tar. Suave, supple and nicely ripe, with a classy, fine-grained texture, well-integrated acidity and subtle richness to its dark fruit and smoked meat flavors. Perhaps best today on the finish, which features excellent persistence and nicely buffered, harmonious tannins. This really spreads out to saturate the palate with smoky dark fruit flavors. Bright red-ruby. Wild aromas of dark berries, tobacco, dried flowers, licorice and brown spices. Like liquid silk in the mouth, combining superb intensity with a weightless, seamless mouth feel. With its compelling sweetness and personality, this may well give pleasure early. Finishes very long, with notes of licorice and chocolatey torrefaction. A lot of these tiny grapes were not crushed and thus released their sugar late in the fermentation, noted Bachelet, who expected this to be around 12.5% alcohol and was shocked to find that it went a full degree higher than that.Inc. Ruby-red. Deep aromas of black plum, licorice and flowers, with complicating hints of truffle and underbrush. Broad, silky and sweet, with impressive volume for the vintage. This will give early pleasure for a Charmes-Chambertin from Bachelet.Inc. GSTSG$1,602.19 -

Bright red-ruby. Pure, perfumed aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, violet, licorice and pepper, plus a hint of molasses. Silky, dense and very intense, with a distinctly tangy high-toned quality giving lift to the sappy berry, dark chocolate and violet flavors. Piquant, classy wine with a very long, firmly tannic finish that delivers mounting length. The highest-toned of these 2010s at 0.55 grams per liter and the sexiest today. Bachelet's 2013 Charmes-Chambertin is striking. Translucent and pulsating in the glass, the 2013 possesses notable energy and fabulous overall balance. Wine Advocate (95-97)
There are 8 barrels of the 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru this year, five of them new. The bouquet demanded encouragement from the glass and it retains a sense of broodiness and introspection. This is holding everything back, although one can see that it leans more to the black side of the fruit spectrum compared to redder Corbeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite succulent tannin, but as always there is real elegance and poise here. It clams up a little towards the finish, just leaves the door open ajar, but sufficient to notice its impressive structure with a tingle of black pepper on the aftertaste. It will need several years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait.Inc. GSTSG$780.33 -
(12x75cl) 2018Wine Advocate (96)
Exquisitely balanced with just 13.2% natural alcohol, Bachelet's 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes has realized all the promise it showed in barrel, wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, plums, orange rind, raw coca, woodsmoke and rich, loamy soil. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's deep and concentrated, built around lively acids and an elegantly muscular chassis of rich, powdery tannins. Seamless and complete, this is another brilliant Charmes from Bachelet, and I can't wait to revisit it a decade or two from now.Inc. GSTSG$14,587.43 -

There are five instead of eight barrels of the 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, which is still more than there will be next year. This takes its time to open, revealing wild strawberry and black cherry scents entwined with hints of graphite and crushed stone. The palate is framed by very fine tannins, the palate sweet and concentrated with dark cherries, fig and damson. Gentle grip on the finish with very long length, this should give 20-30 years drinking pleasure.Inc. GSTSG$2,915.53 -

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is reduced to three and a half barrels this year, half the normal crop. It has a complex nose with dark berry fruit, forest floor and pressed flowers, beautifully-defined and gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is (again) supremely well balanced, quite peppery, with a silver bead of acidity. Darker fruit emerge towards the saline finish that is quite Mazoyères in style. Long tail on the finish. Alas, there is very little of the 2021 Côtes de Nuits Villages (7 instead of 22 barrels). This has a clean and precise, quite minerally bouquet. These vines were originally 100 year old but there has been substantial repiquage (the replacement of dying or virused vines with new ones) in recent years. In BondSG$1,435.00 -

Bachelet's 2013 Charmes-Chambertin is striking. Translucent and pulsating in the glass, the 2013 possesses notable energy and fabulous overall balance. Dark red cherry, violet, leather and smoke gradually unfurl in a mysterious, beguiling Charmes that will provide fabulous drinking for many years. In BondSG$4,990.00 -
Wine Advocate (95-97)
It will need several years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait.In BondSG$706.00 -
(12x75cl) 2018Wine Advocate (96)
Exquisitely balanced with just 13.2% natural alcohol, Bachelet's 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes has realized all the promise it showed in barrel, wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, plums, orange rind, raw coca, woodsmoke and rich, loamy soil. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's deep and concentrated, built around lively acids and an elegantly muscular chassis of rich, powdery tannins. Seamless and complete, this is another brilliant Charmes from Bachelet, and I can't wait to revisit it a decade or two from now.In BondSG$13,280.00 -
(2x75cl) 2020Vinous (94)
There are five instead of eight barrels of the 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, which is still more than there will be next year. This takes its time to open, revealing wild strawberry and black cherry scents entwined with hints of graphite and crushed stone. The palate is framed by very fine tannins, the palate sweet and concentrated with dark cherries, fig and damson. Gentle grip on the finish with very long length, this should give 20-30 years drinking pleasure. In BondSG$2,655.00 -

Vinous (95-97)
The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is reduced to three and a half barrels this year, half the normal crop. It has a complex nose with dark berry fruit, forest floor and pressed flowers, beautifully-defined and gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is (again) supremely well balanced, quite peppery, with a silver bead of acidity. Darker fruit emerge towards the saline finish that is quite Mazoyères in style. Long tail on the finish. Divine. In BondSG$1,025.00 -

Vinous (87-89)
Alas, there is very little of the 2021 Côtes de Nuits Villages (7 instead of 22 barrels). This has a clean and precise, quite minerally bouquet. The palate is sweet and pastille-like on the entry, smooth texture, perhaps just denuded the complexity of more benevolent seasons on the straightlaced finish. It will still give several years' drinking pleasure. In BondSG$128.00
