The Wine Independent (99)

The Palmer 2019 is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs considerable shaking to unlock notions of baked plums, boysenberry preserves, and crème de cassis, leading to wafts of rose oil and espresso. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam-packed with rich, seductive black and blue fruit, supported by heart-thumping tension and very fine tannins, finishing with epic length and jaw-dropping fragrance. Stunning!

Sensational aromatics of ripe black cherries, blueberries, chocolate, roasted herbs, graphite, and violets emerge from the 2023 Château Palmer, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot that spent 12 months in 60% new French oak followed by 12 months in foudre. It's deep, rich, and full-bodied on the palate, with flawless balance, ripe, polished tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It brings another level of brilliance, elegance, and finesse yet is deep, rich, and incredibly pure. It's one of the wines of the vintage and is distinctly Palmer! Hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 30 years or more. There are roughly 11,500 cases produced. Drink 2030-2060.

The “Historical XIX Century Wine” (as it is now called) is a blend of 85% Bordeaux from the vineyards of Château Palmer and 15% Syrah from the Rhône Valley. The idea is to re-create a Margaux wine as it might have been in the 19th century, when it was common to blend in Rhone Syrah to give extra power and weight to the Cabernet-based wines of Médoc.

In today’s globally warmed world, there is little need to add anything extraneous to beef up a wine like Château Palmer! But both the exercise and the resulting wine are unique to Palmer and hence widely collected by Palmer enthusiasts.

Decanter (97)

The second release of this ‘Wine of the World’ by master blender Michel Rolland. The 2016 vintage combines 39% Merlot (from Bordeaux), 33% Cabernet Sauvignon (from Napa Valley), 19% Malbec (from Argentina), 6% Cabernet Franc (from South Africa), and 3% Petit Verdot (from Spain)—deep ruby colour. What’s immediately noticeable is the intensity of minerality on the nose, as compared to the 2015 vintage, coupled with darker berry fruits like blackberry, plum, cassis and tobacco spices. All the same, fruit appears on the medium-bodied palate as juicy, round and plump, supported by a bed of firm, taut tannins, which resolve with a rush of ironstone minerality and blood orange acidity. World-renowned consultant winemaker and master blender Michel Rolland has partnered with Travis Braithwaite, a logistical maestro, to create the most consequential blend of a lifetime. Bearing no appellation, Pangaea combines grapes from France, Spain, South Africa, Argentina, and the United States, chasing after a terroir expression of Mother Earth. First, each wine is made in its own country—harvested, fermented, and barrel-aged. Ageing is anywhere from 12-26 months. When a wine is ready for blending, it is racked into stainless steel barrels and transported under temperature control by boat or air to a winery in Napa Valley. Once gathered in Napa, the final blends are put together by Michel Rolland, Braithwaite, and consultant winemaker Jean Hoefliger.
