Vinous (97)The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a pretty rich, bombastic wine, especially for Mayacamas. A blast of dark fruit, incense, tobacco, licorice, spice and mocha hits the palate. I would give the 2019 at least a few years in bottle to settle down, as it is quite the powerhouse today. This is an unusually flamboyant wine with plenty of richness and a bit less in the way of subtlety. The opulence of the vintage comes through loud and clear. |

Vinous (98)The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Sunset Block emerges from one of the newer parcels planted during the large redevelopment here that started in 2014. It shows a bit more brightness and energy than the main Cabernet bottling, with all of the vertical structure and overall intensity that is such a signature at Mayacamas. At the same time, the Sunset Block shows an elegant side of the property that is so alluring. |

Bright, exquisitely perfumed and nuanced, Mazeyres shows just how attractive the best wines from Pomerol's sandier soils can be. Floral notes add lift to a core of red/purplish berry fruit, with striking textural depth and nuance that builds in the glass. Although quite accessible, Mazeyres also offers a good bit of depth while retaining its mid-weight personality. Tasted four times. |
