The nose sings of the Eden Valley with a sage and black fruit cocktail of flavours, and the texture is pure velvet. This is a cracker of a wine and a classic Mount Edelstone to boot, and it is already bafflingly precocious. But don’t worry because behind the exultant volleys of pristine fruit lurks muscle and crunchy tannin that will propel this wine forward for two decades and more. As time ticks on I become more and more enamoured by Mount Edelstone and this is another release that will handsomely reward those who manage to track down stock. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2011 Tinto, i.e., the flagship Estate wine with just Mouchão on the label, is the typical blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira aged for 24 months in oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. A bit funky on opening, it has a touch of green olive followed by a lot of oak flavor. This big boy is also tightly wound, rather intense on the finish in both flavor and power, and desperately in need of more time in the bottle. It shows beautiful mid-palate finesse and laser-like precision, good acidity and plenty of grip on that lingering finish. If the Trincadeira (from which, I suspect, some of the funk comes) stays in control, this has the chance to become rather brilliant, perhaps even more so than I now think. Give it some time, though. You don't want to drink this today. It should be a lot more harmonious and expressive around 2020. Granting that there is some projection here for its potential, I have to lean up on this just now. |

Dare I say that it must surely be the best they have produced from this premier cru vineyard. |

The palate is very well balanced with fine definition, taut and fresh, very harmonious with a gentle grip on the silky finish. This is another classically-styled Gevrey-Chambertin that should age with style. |

The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, well balanced with black fruit mixed with tobacco and graphite, with a sustained finish. Excellent. |

Perhaps here I would have liked just a little more delineation for it seems rather blocky and heavy on the finish. Afford this 5 to 7 years in bottle - hopefully it will lighten up. |
