Jeb Dunnuck (98)Pouring a deep matte red color, the 2021 Magari is the most noble and complete of the wines in this tasting and lifts with layered notes of graphite, kirsch, lavender oil, and sweet Mediterranean herbs. Full and complex, it fills the senses with velvety tannins and mouthwatering saltiness. It’s harmonious and quite profound in this vintage, exceeding the quality of the 2019. It really shows the pedigree and complexity that this wine can display and is fantastic now but is going to age slowly if stored properly over the coming 25-30 years. A highlight in this vintage, it should have been on my top lists. |

Vinous (91)The 2018 Promis is a very pretty wine. Lifted, floral aromatics, silky tannins and mid-weight structure give it tons of immediacy and overall appeal. Hints of succulent red cherry, cinnamon, mint and leather linger effortlessly. |

Vinous (91)The 2019 Promis is a fruity, delicious wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Inky blue fruit, lavender, spice, mint and new leather lend exuberance to this mid-weight, wonderfully inviting Maremma red from the Gaja family. |

James Suckling (96)The fresh and just ripe strawberry aromas really come through here, together with some licorice and floral highlights. Medium to full body with fine, focused tannins that are vertical and bring your palate down through the wine. A solid and beautiful wine for the vintage. Try after 2025. |

Jeb Dunnuck (98-100)The 2019 Barolo Conteisa is a noble wine, with angular and drying tannins, as well as more mineral expression. Notes of medicinal herbs, crushed stones, and pure cherry lead to a wine that is more restrained right now but will be fantastic. Through the palate, it has compact but wonderful concentration and a driving structure and is more herbaceous, savory, and mineral than fruity and floral. It is outstanding. Drink the 2020s while waiting for the 2019s. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97)The Serralunga power comes through in the 2020 Barolo Conteisa. Boasting a jeweled, shimmering ruby color, it’s ripe and expressive with pristine notes of strawberry preserve, balsamic herbs, candied flowers, and sweet tobacco. It offers a lot of ripe sapidity on the palate, with a resinous quality, a touch of warmth, a rounded feel, and great length. It’s fairly approachable now, but it’s going to have the structure to last over the long haul, 20 years or so. |

Wine Advocate (94)The overt fruit and depth typical of Costa Russi comes through in spades in the 2009. Plums, black cherries, chocolate and new leather form the core of this round, expressive Costa Russi. As beautiful as this is, the 2009 remains deeply marked by the vintage. There is plenty of beauty and richness in the glass, but not quite the sheer visceral thrill of the very best Costa Russis. Although I wouldn’t open any of the 2009 single-vineyard wines in the near-term, the Costa Russi is the most expressive of the three. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. |

Vinous (95)The 2010 Costa Russi is unusually firm in this vintage, with far less early appeal than is typically the case. Floral, perfumed and sensual, the 2010 is going to require time in the cellar for the tannins to soften. The 2010 is likely to remain a slightly slender, classic Costa Russi built on energy, freshness and vibrancy, but all the elements are in place for this to develop into a fabulous wine. Black cherries, plums, mocha and menthol wrap around the powerful finish. The 2010 is one the most reticent, tightly-wound Costa Russis I can remember tasting. This is a great showing. |

Vinous (98)The 2013 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a real head-turner. Crystalline and utterly vivid in its expression of Nebbiolo, the 2013 is all class. Stylistically, the Costa Russi is closest to the straight Barbaresco, but it has a little more mid-palate sweetness and density. Bright floral and minty notes add lift on the chiseled, expressive finish. The Costa Russi is the star of the show this year, considering it is the least pedigreed of Gaja's three single-vineyard sites. The 2013 has been stunningly beautiful on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. |
