Jeb Dunnuck (98)

More tannic and chiseled, the 2022 Pinot Noir Elliott comes from the West Sonoma Coast AVA and offers a more compact profile on the nose at this youthful stage, with notes of wild raspberries, fresh wild herbs, roses, and pine. The medium-bodied palate boasts a wonderful structure, with soiled tension and a ferrous quality, with iron-rich notes of blood orange pith and a long finish. It’s going to need time in the cellar to unfurl. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Hellenthal Old Shop Block is another searingly intense wine in this lineup of young Pinots. Accordingly, readers should be in no rush. Chalk, white pepper, incense, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, blood orange and mint meld into a core of red-toned fruit. Bright acids and vibrant tannins give the wine its shape and overall drive.

A deep ruby hue, the 2021 Pinot Noir Occidental Vineyard takes on a lot of the qualities of the Annabelle and amplifies them. Offering notes of blackberry, black raspberry, fresh and pure herbs, rocky earth, and black cherry as well as a sanguine minerality, it also delivers a haunting mineral note that’s almost impossible to put into words. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Trout Gulch utilized 75% whole cluster fruit in fermentation, and it is lifted with salted raspberry, wet stones, and delicate red flowers. A medium ruby hue, the 2022 Pinot Noir Trout Gulch also comes from the Santa Cruz Mountains, where this vineyard sees more southern and coastal influence and is situated only 3.5 miles from the ocean. Compared to the Mindego Ridge, it shows a darker and more savory profile. On the nose, it’s layered and complex with notes of wild raspberries, fresh pine, fresh roses, and sea spray. The palate has a more angular structure, with medium body, crunchy, ripe tannins, refreshing, snappy acidity, and a chalky, mineral texture. It also expresses undercurrents of more savory umami notes through the finish, which will only enhance the wine as it comes into its own over the next several years. Drink 2025-2037.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Trout Gulch was tasted as a barrel sample. It’s refreshing and pure on the nose, with notes of mixed berry fruit, floral perfume, and fresh piney herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, with a fresh, stony texture and a more refined tannic structure. It’s a lovely, mineral-driven wine with a wild, salty, savory finish.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (95)

Deep purple-ruby. Knockout nose of black cherry, minerals, coffee liqueur and violet offers uncommon depth and complexity. The flavors of blackberry, black plum and minerals are complicated by a note of iron and given wonderful clarity and cut by harmonious, vibrant acidity. Finishes very long and pure, with distinctive balsamic nuances. There's lots of sweet fleshy fruit here but the wine comes across as amazingly refined and graceful thanks to its vibrant acidity, which really extends the flavors at the back. The best young Certan of the last 12 or 15 years.

The 2011 Certan-de-May has a well-defined and fresh bouquet, quintessentially Pomerol with a touch of black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-judged acidity, good backbone with black pepper and cedar towards the slightly dry but still appealing finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2015 Certan de May is composed of 80% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc, displaying a medium garnet-purple color and nose of warm red cherries, mulberries, crushed red and black plums and raspberry leaves with nuances of wild thyme, dried roses, cloves and eucalypt. Medium to full-bodied and boasting great harmony in the mouth, the palate delivers loads of red and black fruit layers interspersed with floral and herb accents and framed by a firm, ripe, fine-grained backbone, finishing with wonderful length and freshness.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)

The 2016 Certan de May is a powerful, dense wine, just as it was en primeur. A blast of grilled herbs, leather, smoke, tobacco, licorice and dark-fleshed fruits makes a strong opening statement. Potent and strap in feel, Certan de May shows the more virile side of Pomerol. The profile is decidedly sepia-toned. Readers should plan on being patient with the 2016. It is a jewel of a wine that just needs bottle age to be at its best.

The 2017 Certan de May is a powerful, dense wine. Graphite, smoke, grilled herbs and dark red and purplish fruit confer a real sense of gravitas that also comes through in the wine's unctuous fruit and overall richness. The 2017 packs a serious punch, that is for sure. Although not the last word in finesse, Certan de May offers plenty of richness and body. It is one of the bigger Pomerols of the year. I would give the 2017 a few years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften.
