(6x75cl) 2008Vinous (94)
Lisini's 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia hits the palate with huge dark fruit, incense, tobacco, smoke, grilled herbs, licorice and game. Ample and structured on the palate, the 2008 is a wine for the cellar. Today, the tannins are imposing, but there is plenty to look forward to. Dried rose petals, game, incense, orange peel and white pepper are some of the notes that are laced into the expressive finish. Stylistically, the 2008 is likely to always be burly and a bit round around the edges, but its beauty is undeniable.Inc. GSTSG$770.00 -

Dried roses and cherries are lifted by hints of cinnamon and clove as the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia grumbles up from the glass. This is nearly velvety in feel, with a dense wave of tart wild berries complicated by hints of sour citrus and balsamic spice. Plum and licorice nuances linger on, as the 2017 finishes structured, yet not severely so, leaving hints of mocha and red currants. The Ugolaia is another example of the success that Lisini had in this difficult vintage. That said, it will require a number of years to come fully into focus.Inc. GSTSG$1,021.77 -
(6x75cl) 2022```htmlThe Lisini Rosso di Montalcino 2022 exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship of the renowned Lisini estate, nestled in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany. Crafted predominantly from Sangiovese grapes sourced from meticulously selected vineyards, this vintage undergoes a gentle hand-harvesting process to ensure optimal ripeness and flavour integrity. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine benefits from a precise balance of fruit expression and acidity. Following fermentation, it is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, imparting subtle notes of vanilla and spice while enhancing its elegant structure. On the palate, Lisini Rosso di Montalcino 2022 reveals vibrant red cherry aromas, complemented by hints of tobacco and earthy undertones, culminating in a harmonious and lingering finish. This fine red is a testament to Lisini’s dedication to quality, making it a distinguished choice for discerning wine enthusiasts.

The 2018 Estate Reserve Syrah contains 50% whole-bunch fruit and is aged in 500- and 700-liter barrels, 30% new. It has an extremely pure, slightly floral bouquet of bright blueberry and black currant fruit infused with scents of crushed iris petals and violets, almost Burgundian in style. The palate is extremely well balanced with perfectly pitched acidity and filigreed tannins. There is an unerring sense of weightlessness about this Syrah, which is one of the most precise Lismore reds I have encountered over several years of tasting. Absolutely stunning.Inc. GSTSG$554.27 -

The 2021 Syrah Estate Reserve, which comes from the vineyard most damaged by the fire in 2020, is 50% whole bunches and aged of 500- and 700-liter barrels, 25% new. The potent nose has raspberry coulis, blueberry and touches of cough candy, taking its time to settle in the glass and lose its initial exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled, slightly chalky tannins. It’s fresh and vibrant, sapid towards the finish, with a long, Côte-Rôtie-like aftertaste and garrigue notes filtering through with time. This should be afforded a couple of years in bottle and will continue to evolve over the next 15-20 years. Just 12% alcohol, too.Inc. GSTSG$180.85 -

The 2017 Syrah continues to serve as one of the Cape's finest expressions of the variety. The 2016 Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard is elegant and silky in the glass. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and kirsch dance across the palate. Exotic spice notes emerge with a bit of time in the glass. Beguiling and expressive, the 2016 remains quite young. It's a wine that needed a ton of time to show its true potential. Yorkville series soils over sandstone, unusual for Anderson Valley, yield such distinctive wines, especially in the tannin profile. Superb.Inc. GSTSG$2,325.84 -
Jeb Dunnuck (97)
A medium ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard is very pretty and lifted aromatically with wild herbs, pomegranate, and tea leaf. On the palate, it’s fresh and bright, with a vibrant fresh citrus note of orange zest, as well as dusty earth. It has an angular tannin structure with linear drive and fresh acidity with mouthwatering salinity. Drink 2025-2040.Inc. GSTSG$1,015.23 -

The 2016 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard is fabulous. Elegant and polished with stunning vertical structure, the 2016 shows why this site in Fort Ross-Seaview is so revered. Crushed flowers, mint and chalk weave through a core of nuanced Pinot fruit. The Hirsch is another wine that needed time to fully blossom. Perched at 1,200-1,400 feet in elevation, most of Hirsch sits just above the fog line, which contributes to its unique microclimate. Superb.Inc. GSTSG$2,401.23 -

Just as it was from barrel, the 2017 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard shows the effects of heat spikes that were especially challenging at this estate. Dried fruit, roasted notes, washed out flavors and mid-weight structure are impossible to escape. I had hoped élevage might help the Hirsch come together, but that never really happened. I would prefer to drink the 2017 on the early side.Inc. GSTSG$2,505.69 -

The 2019 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard comes from vines located just one ridge in from the Pacific Ocean and planted in 1995 at 1,200 to 1,500 feet in elevation, Medium ruby in color, it's scented of blood orange, cranberry and rhubarb, with nuances of turned earth, conifer, seaweed and mushrooms. The palate is medium-bodied with an abundance of silty tannins, appealing bursts of acidity, nuanced yet concentrated fruits and a long finish. It deserves at least another 2-3 years in bottle. 318 cases were made.Inc. GSTSG$2,440.51 -

The 2020 Pinot Noir One Acre is fascinating to taste next to The Return, as it emerges from a different section of the vineyard, a crown with east and west-facing exposures. Dried cherry, crushed flowers, herbs, iron and cedar infuse this earthy, gamy Pinot Noir with quite a bit of character.
