Planted in 1912 and with an easterly aspect and lower altitude (400m) than The Wheelright, Prue Henschke describes this soil type in this historic vineyard as ‘a dream’. Sandy loam over gravelly red clay and, below, layers of micaceous schist equal the perfect Henschke soil sandwich! Prue recognises that these strata give her wines more vigour and more power, and I can echo these thoughts because this is one of the most expressive young Henschke wines I have seen. There is no doubt that the flavours and perfumes in the glass directly reflect this precise site; this is all you can ask of a great wine. The purity of the blackberry theme is sensational and while the French oak does what French oak always tries to do – add gravitas and detail – it is the 14% American oak from the Appalachian Mountains that adds style, richness, and a touch of glamour to proceedings. After all of the action, the finish is respectfully prim, and tart and I love it when wines finish correctly on the palate with a ‘proper full stop’. I am aware that I get rather over-excited about Mount Edelstone, and so I paid particular attention to how this wine opened up over the course of four days, and it simply unfurled an immense array of charm and intricacy that, on first tasting, was discreetly hidden behind panels of flavour. This is a thrillingly controlled wine with invigorating flavours, and it will make three decades in a good cellar.Inc. GSTSG$1,299.74 -

This is a genuinely outstanding Mount Edelstone, with glorious fruit and multi-layered complexity. The nose sings of the Eden Valley with a sage and black fruit cocktail of flavours, and the texture is pure velvet. This is a cracker of a wine and a classic Mount Edelstone to boot, and it is already bafflingly precocious. But don’t worry because behind the exultant volleys of pristine fruit lurks muscle and crunchy tannin that will propel this wine forward for two decades and more. As time ticks on I become more and more enamoured by Mount Edelstone and this is another release that will handsomely reward those who manage to track down stock.Inc. GSTSG$1,075.20 -

Wine Advocate (95)
The 2011 Tinto, i.e., the flagship Estate wine with just Mouchão on the label, is the typical blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira aged for 24 months in oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. A bit funky on opening, it has a touch of green olive followed by a lot of oak flavor. This big boy is also tightly wound, rather intense on the finish in both flavor and power, and desperately in need of more time in the bottle. It shows beautiful mid-palate finesse and laser-like precision, good acidity and plenty of grip on that lingering finish. If the Trincadeira (from which, I suspect, some of the funk comes) stays in control, this has the chance to become rather brilliant, perhaps even more so than I now think. Give it some time, though. You don't want to drink this today. It should be a lot more harmonious and expressive around 2020. Granting that there is some projection here for its potential, I have to lean up on this just now.Inc. GSTSG$150.68 -

50% whole bunch vinification, 25% new wood. First to be picked. Pretty ruby-purple colour. The nose here has the elegance and charm of Chambolle with the lifted fresher qualities of the whole bunches. The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Village includes around 20-30% whole bunches. It has a light pepperiness on the nose, dark berry fruit, a touch of sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with quite fine tannins that frame the tart red fruit, a touch of orange sorbet towards the bright finish. This ends on a high note!Inc. GSTSG$680.60 -
Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes includes 55% whole bunch fruit and it was matured in 30% new French oak. It offers bright redcurrant and cranberry scents on the nose that is well defined and offers plenty of freshness and vitality. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, structured in style with more crunchy black fruit here than the aromatics, sous-bois and white pepper towards the finish. This is premier cru in quality—excellent.Inc. GSTSG$675.23 -

Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Champonnets saw 65% whole bunch fruit and 65% new oak, and saw no pigeage in this vintage—just remontage. It has a lovely oyster shell scent complementing the black fruit on the nose, beautifully defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, supple in the mouth with crisp acidity, a perfect combination of power and refinement. What a gorgeous wine from the domaine! Dare I say that it must surely be the best they have produced from this premier cru vineyard.Inc. GSTSG$2,385.79 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnets 1er Cru is showing the stem addition on the nose at the moment, though that will all integrated with time. There is a lovely, subtle sea spray/oyster shell scent here that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with fine definition, taut and fresh, very harmonious with a gentle grip on the silky finish. This is another classically-styled Gevrey-Chambertin that should age with style.Inc. GSTSG$654.50 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru is matured with 60% whole bunches. The stems exert quite an influence on the nose, black pepper notes rather obscuring the fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, fine tannins, and quite mineral driven. Here, the stems show much better integration. I suspect that the aromatics will come together with bottle age, so don't be afraid to cellar this.Inc. GSTSG$888.85 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes Vieilles Vignes comes from 80-year old vines in two areas in the north of the appellation, blended with 70% whole bunches and raised in 25% new oak. This has a very lively and intense bouquet that actually puts the Les Jouises in the shade - vibrant red fruit intermingling with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, well balanced with black fruit mixed with tobacco and graphite, with a sustained finish. Excellent.Inc. GSTSG$1,224.03 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes is more opulent and richer on the nose compared directly with the Les Jouises, though it does not convey the same delineation or mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with vivid red berry fruit, white pepper and an almost citric note towards the finish. Enjoyable as this is, I am more smitten by the elegance of the Les Jouises this year.Inc. GSTSG$483.31 -
Vinous (88-90)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes Vieilles Vignes comes from the north of the village. I feel that the whole bunches (60%) comes across a little too strong on the nose, consequently it masks some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, quite fresh and saline, a healthy dash of white pepper towards the understated finish. Fine, but I might have dialled down the whole bunches here.Inc. GSTSG$735.10 -
Vinous (83-85)
The 2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from two vineyards in Gevrey and is completely de-stemmed. It has a light and slightly earthy nose that just needs a little more clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, but there is a touch of bitterness on the finish at the moment.Inc. GSTSG$410.28 -
(6x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2015 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru includes 55% whole bunch fruit with 50% new oak. It has a composed bouquet with fine delineation, crushed rose petal and cold wet limestone permeating through the black and red fruit. It conveys the imperious personality I like from my Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, black fruit stained with orange rind and white pepper, conveying the structure and slight aloofness I appreciate in young Clos Saint-Denis, reassuring that this will age over 15-20 years. This is lip-smackingly delicious and just utterly superb.Inc. GSTSG$2,543.47 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru matures in 50% new oak with 60% whole bunches from 45-year old vines that are Cordon pruned, although they are introducing some Guyot simple. It has a precocious bouquet with macerated dark cherries, blackcurrant and spicebox. The palate is dense and rather introverted. Perhaps here I would have liked just a little more delineation for it seems rather blocky and heavy on the finish. Afford this 5 to 7 years in bottle - hopefully it will lighten up.Inc. GSTSG$375.95 -
(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (97)
The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is arresting on the nose, showing a touch of brief reduction before black and red fruit soar from the glass. There seems to be some stem addition here lending an attractive pepperiness, but it is more opaque and more vivid than the 2018 Clos de Tart. The palate is medium-bodied with distinctive whole bunch acting as the guiding hand. Maybe too much? Yet it is very fresh and vibrant with a wonderful arching structure on the finish. This is being broached years too early and it jus needs a long time to assimilate the stems. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. GSTSG$1,987.57

This ends on a high note!In BondSG$565.00 -

This is premier cru in quality—excellent. In BondSG$568.00 -

Dare I say that it must surely be the best they have produced from this premier cru vineyard. In BondSG$2,070.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnets 1er Cru is showing the stem addition on the nose at the moment, though that will all integrated with time. There is a lovely, subtle sea spray/oyster shell scent here that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with fine definition, taut and fresh, very harmonious with a gentle grip on the silky finish. This is another classically-styled Gevrey-Chambertin that should age with style. In BondSG$547.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru is matured with 60% whole bunches. The stems exert quite an influence on the nose, black pepper notes rather obscuring the fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, fine tannins, and quite mineral driven. Here, the stems show much better integration. I suspect that the aromatics will come together with bottle age, so don't be afraid to cellar this.In BondSG$762.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes Vieilles Vignes comes from 80-year old vines in two areas in the north of the appellation, blended with 70% whole bunches and raised in 25% new oak. This has a very lively and intense bouquet that actually puts the Les Jouises in the shade - vibrant red fruit intermingling with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, well balanced with black fruit mixed with tobacco and graphite, with a sustained finish. Excellent. In BondSG$1,020.00 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes is more opulent and richer on the nose compared directly with the Les Jouises, though it does not convey the same delineation or mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with vivid red berry fruit, white pepper and an almost citric note towards the finish. Enjoyable as this is, I am more smitten by the elegance of the Les Jouises this year.In BondSG$384.00 -
Vinous (88-90)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes Vieilles Vignes comes from the north of the village. I feel that the whole bunches (60%) comes across a little too strong on the nose, consequently it masks some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, quite fresh and saline, a healthy dash of white pepper towards the understated finish. Fine, but I might have dialled down the whole bunches here.In BondSG$615.00 -
Vinous (83-85)
The 2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from two vineyards in Gevrey and is completely de-stemmed. It has a light and slightly earthy nose that just needs a little more clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, but there is a touch of bitterness on the finish at the moment. In BondSG$317.00 -

This is lip-smackingly delicious and just utterly superb. In BondSG$2,280.00 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru matures in 50% new oak with 60% whole bunches from 45-year old vines that are Cordon pruned, although they are introducing some Guyot simple. It has a precocious bouquet with macerated dark cherries, blackcurrant and spicebox. The palate is dense and rather introverted. Perhaps here I would have liked just a little more delineation for it seems rather blocky and heavy on the finish. Afford this 5 to 7 years in bottle - hopefully it will lighten up.In BondSG$336.00 -
(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (97)
The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is arresting on the nose, showing a touch of brief reduction before black and red fruit soar from the glass. There seems to be some stem addition here lending an attractive pepperiness, but it is more opaque and more vivid than the 2018 Clos de Tart. The palate is medium-bodied with distinctive whole bunch acting as the guiding hand. Maybe too much? Yet it is very fresh and vibrant with a wonderful arching structure on the finish. This is being broached years too early and it jus needs a long time to assimilate the stems. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. In BondSG$1,770.00
