The 2020 d'Aiguilhe captures all of the exuberance of the vintage. Jammy and explosive, the 2020 offers up a heady mélange of raspberry preserves, mocha, spice and rose petal. This lush, extravagantly rich wine is a real beauty, but the style is definitely pushed in the direction of ripeness and textural intensity. Give the tannins a few years to soften.Inc. GSTSG$439.18 -

D’Arenberg’s most famous wine is its flagship, The Dead Arm Shiraz. The 2005 The Dead Arm Shiraz is sourced from ancient head-pruned vines. It was aged for 22 months in a mix of new and used French and American oak. It is opaque purple/black with an expansive perfume of toast, smoke, spice box, mineral, pencil lead, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, opulent, and super-concentrated, this structured, lengthy wine will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and drink well through 2025.Inc. GSTSG$1,263.09 -

The 1996 d'Armailhac is fully mature on the nose with dark plum, briary, cloves and quite a strong violet aroma. The palate is slightly aggressive on the entry with chalky tannin. The acidity is quite pronounced here, firm in the mouth, masculine for d'Armailhac with less flesh than other vintages, although there is decent freshness and spiciness towards the finish. You could drink this now but I might just afford it another 3-4 years to show its mettle. Tasted July 2016.Inc. GSTSG$2,053.56 -

Aromatic and complex, the 2000 Château D'Armailhac offers currants, cedary herbs, tobacco, graphite, a kiss of minerality, and baking spices on the nose. A classic Pauillac, it’s medium-bodied on the palate, with a straight, focused texture, ripe yet still present tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. Drinking well now, it will hold here for 15+ years. Drink 2026-2041.Inc. GSTSG$2,053.56 -

The 2001 d’Armailhac is immediately more impressive on the nose compared to the 2000, offering darker and more vibrant, blacker fruit compared to the previous vintage. There is more fruit concentration and much more intensity. The medium-bodied palate features sappy black fruit laced with seaweed and orange peel. A lovely underlying saline edge lends tension toward the finish. This d’Armailhac is maturing beautifully and clearly has the upper hand over its millennial counterpart.Inc. GSTSG$1,080.19 -

Mouton continues to improve on this neighboring property just to the south, where it's created a delicious 2004. Located in the north of Pauillac, between Mouton and Pontet-Canet, this 123-acre estate is also part of G.F.A. Baronne Philippine de Rothschild. The aroma balances meaty fruit and mineral scents, and while the pungent red fruit is always there, the tannins seem to increase their intensity with air. They cover the pure black cherry flavor like a powerful skin, deep and plush with an iron-knuckle punch. The tannins don't go away, but their inner velvet eventually wins out. This has improved significantly since the en primeur tastings and will continue to evolve for ten to 15 years in the bottle.Inc. GSTSG$1,556.48 -

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château d'Armailhac has a feisty bouquet with tobacco and sage-infused red berry fruit that seem open for business, unlike some of the other 2006 Pauillac wines. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannin. There is good weight in the mouth with mint-infused blackberry fruit, fine structure with admirable precision on the finish. All it lacks is the persistence of some of its peers, yet it still constitutes a very fine Pauillac that I probably under-rated out of barrel. Tasted January 2016.Inc. GSTSG$1,425.68 -
