The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from the lieu-dit of Les Champs Traversins, has a well-defined bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, loamy/sous-bois scents and a touch of wilted iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, crisp acidity and a lightly spiced finish. This is a well-crafted Echézeaux from Bichot/Clos Frantin, and it should give 15–20 years’ drinking pleasure, possibly more.Inc. GSTSG$2,080.22 -

A very elegant and refined Echezeaux that nimbly moves over your palate. Underplayed power and very fine tannins make this a shy beauty, but if you give it time and attention then you will be amply rewarded. Very silky and delicate, long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.Inc. GSTSG$1,944.41 -

One of the slightly darker purple colours, with a ripe and dark edged fruit. I sense the whole bunches more here than in the Clos Vougeot. Becomes more nuanced further back on the palate, with greater energy to the fruit. I was not sure from the nose but the palate works with a good balance between the slightly riper fruit profile and the acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.Inc. GSTSG$2,821.42 -

The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru offers precocious red cherries, orange blossom and tobacco, almost Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. The palate is well balanced with fine structure. I like the firmness and backbone, and the grip on the finish. Not the finest Richebourg I have encountered this vintage, but certainly a wine of good breeding.Inc. GSTSG$3,423.41 -

Burghound (92)
This beauty is maturing nicely as the spicy, cool and pure mix of both red and dark berry fruit scents is beginning to display soft secondary characters. There is fine power and volume to the robust and muscular medium weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the complex, balanced and solidly persistent finale. While this isn't fully ready it's not so far away that it couldn't be enjoyed now; that said I would prefer to give it another 2 to 4 years of cellar time first.Inc. GSTSG$270.95 -

Wine Advocate (94)
Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts from Domaine du Clos Frantin was not the only wine from this Beaune stalwart that far exceeded expectations. Here, it has a pure nose with perfumed dark cherry and blueberry fruit, the oak here well integrated whilst maintaining fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, well judged acidity, tensile with a finish that fans out gloriously. This is a superb, animated, energetic Vosne-Romanée that is an absolute delight.Inc. GSTSG$229.89 -
Burghound (91-94)
A pungent nose is presently composed of mild reduction and green tea with a few disparate spice elements lurking in the background. The muscular, serious and powerful medium-bodied flavors possess excellent depth of material that coats the palate on the very firmly structured, long and balanced finale. This has everything it needs to be first-rate as the tannins are mature and well-integrated and the balance is impeccable.Inc. GSTSG$1,266.01 -
Wine Advocate (92-94)
The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1Er Cru les Malconsorts has an elegant, refined bouquet with mineral-tinged red berry fruit, composed and a little backward but nicely focused. There is class here. The palate is supple on the entry with fine tannin, silky smooth in texture, very harmonious and nicely structured on the finish. This is a subtle Malconsorts, one that should not be underestimated.Inc. GSTSG$257.87 -

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru seems to have been born to embarrass my rather tepid reaction to this wine from barrel. Wow! This has me smitten. It offers a very floral, seductive bouquet with pressed violet petals liberally scattered over the black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, and just a hint of vanilla in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. This is very cohesive, harmonious and silky-smooth in texture, with a light touch of blood orange and brown spices that impart complexity on the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. GSTSG$248.78 -

A relatively deeply pitched nose offers plenty of both floral and spice elements along with notes of plum, dark cherry and a touch of Asian-style tea. As is usually the case there is excellent volume and a taut muscularity to the sappy broad-shouldered flavors that flash superb depth and persistence. Note well though that this classic example is definitely built-to-age and is going to need at least most of a decade to be approachable. Recommended.Inc. GSTSG$319.27 -

A fragrant and complex Vosne-Romanée with deep black-cherry and floral notes on the nose. Then comes the rich and very elegant palate, the tannins almost completely masked by the fruit, until you reach the very powerful yet polished finish. Try in 2023.Inc. GSTSG$908.32 -

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, slightly smudged red fruit, leather and undergrowth. It does seem to gain clarity with modest aeration though. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and crisp, quite linear with fine sapidity on the structure, backward finish. A Premier Cru with a long future ahead. (from a large 1.76 ha parcel). Here too there is enough wood to notice but not to intrude on the exceptionally spicy and overtly floral-suffused nose of dark currant and plum. There is outstanding intensity, muscle and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract on the sappy, mouth coating, robust and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is excellent and worth checking out. (92-94)/2037+Inc. GSTSG$1,346.63 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Pure beautiful purple, with the nose of exceptional hedonistic class associated with this vineyard. One can detect the remains of a little reduction in the mouth, which holds it back a fraction at this stage, but this is still a really good wine underneath and will be thoroughly exciting. It has the Malconsorts magic. Drink from 2026-2032.Inc. GSTSG$393.38 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
A fine deep purple, with brilliance. The bouquet has the energy which we expect with that extra note of headiness. The Malconsorts opens out gorgeously and is kept fresh by a good thread of acidity. Pure, long, fine, lifted, medium plus bodied but there is a little bit of majesty here nonetheless. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.Inc. GSTSG$2,331.95 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)
The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru was picked on September 9 with 25% whole cluster and 35% new oak. It offers pretty cranberry and wild strawberry scents on the nose, well-defined, if not quite as complex as its peers. The palate is well balanced with crisp, slightly crunchy red berry fruit on the entry. There is something "playful" about this Les Malconsorts. It doesn't take itself too seriously, yet there is ample tension and considerable mineralité on the finish. Not to be underestimated.Inc. GSTSG$2,201.15 -
Burghound (89-91)
Much more subtle wood sets off overtly spicy aromas of cassis, black cherry and violet scents. The wonderfully seductive flavors possess a velvety and caressing texture while delivering sneaky good length on the firm but balanced structure. This is inviting but serious and it should repay up to a decade of cellaring. Worth checking out.Inc. GSTSG$263.56 -

(the blend is mostly from Damaudes with a small proportion of Basses Maizières). A fresh, cool and restrained nose combines notes of cherry, plum and a whiff of spiced tea. I very much like the texture of the nicely detailed and quite powerful medium weight flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere, and sneaky long finish that displays fine complexity. This is an impressive Vosne villages and worth your interest. (89-92)/2029+Inc. GSTSG$163.39 -

A blend of Damodes du bas and Basses Maizières, picked on 3rd and 7th September. Attractive mid purple. Some nobility to the nose but in a discreet way. This is happily balanced with excellent class, heady Vosne fruit, even some spice, then a firmer tannin, but this works really well. Damodes gives the lift, Maizières the body. Drink from 2028-2035. 5 Star Wine. A blend of Les Damaudes and Basses Maizières, elegance from the former and weight from the latter. An attractive fresh ruby. The bouquet is absolutely Vosne Romanée in its classy petits fruits rouges. Then there is more concentration on the palate, as the Maizières component kicks in. The whole blends well together to a very classy finish. All the structural elements are in place while the raspberry fruit gains in intensity towards the back. Drink from 2028-2035. (65% garnacha, 20% cabernet sauvignon and 15% syrah) Saturated ruby. Remarkably fresh, heady aromas of raspberry, cherry, graphite and rose petal, lifted by incisive spice and pepper accents. Fleshy, velvety and impressively sweet, with the red berry and cherry flavors displaying uncanny depth; an exotic note of fruitcake adds dimension. This broad, luscious wine offers serious weight and terrific vibrancy, finishing impressively long, with tannins buried beneath the rich, concentrated fruit. The best version of this wine I've had, and I've had them all.Inc. GSTSG$1,623.99 -

(aged in French oak barriques, 70% of them new, for 20 months.): Opaque ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet displays scents of red and dark berry preserves, potpourri and Asian spices, with a building mineral nuance. Sappy, palate-staining black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors show outstanding depth and energy, complicated by five-spice powder and vanilla nuances on the back half. The strikingly persistent, gently tannic finish strongly echoes the floral quality, resolving with a zesty berry skin note.Inc. GSTSG$2,059.88
