Complete Whisky Casks

One of the most compelling alternative assets on the market today is cask whisky. The rates of return achievable by whisky casks dwarf those of fine wine, with less risk though there is a more prohibitive cost of entry with casks starting around £3,600 (equivalent to HK$38,500 or SG$6,685) for newly filled barrels and hogsheads and progressing steadily up to 15-year olds at £15,000-£20,000 (equivalent to HK$161,200 - HK$215,000 or SG$27,845 - SG$37,130), at which point the value and cost can begin to truly soar.

Cru is pleased to offer cask sales from some of the finest, most sought after distilleries in Scotland with blue-chip icons Mortlach, Springbank, Laphroaig and Bowmore all attainable for the right price, while more boutique names including closed distilleries and rare single grains, offering incredible upside for comparatively reasonable sums of money.

With Cru's industry-leading automated sales platform designed for fine wine and the first in the world to be applied effectively to cask whisky, there is not where better to invest in this remarkable asset. Whether you're looking for en primeur new make casks, maturing casks with superb upside or venerably mature 25+-year-old single malts we have a uniquely varied supply chain and agile platform built upon our long-standing expertise and close contacts within the industry.

Aultmore Speyside Single Malt Refill Hogshead Cask No. 106 Full Cask 2013

Taking its name from the Gaelic 'an t'Allt Mòr' meaning the "big burn", referring to their water source of the Auchinderran Burn, Aultmore is one of the great success stories of the last 20 years. Relatively unknown until released in the cult Flora & Fauna range and the blue-chip Rare Malts selection, recent years have seen the emergence of official Aultmore bottlings as premium single malts in their own right. Smart branding and exceptional quality means that anyone who tastes this Speyside gem knows they've found something special.

Fine, balanced and elegant; a quintessential Speysider from the town of Keith in Banffshire, Aultmore is prized for it's forward profile of orchard fruit and floral complexity, with mature examples adding a woody incense note that is very well complimented by either a lighter sherry cask or even just left in Bourbon wood for its lifetime.

Tasting Note

We are pleased to have secured this 8-year-old Aultmore cask which is showing tons of upside at this age; a brilliant value in hogshead with over 300 bottles to its credit this has a long life ahead of it and no mistake. This will be best left in Bourbon wood for the next few years before re-racking into either a refill oloroso hoghsead or 1st fill manzanilla to take full advantage of the spirit's elegance and fruit profile.

2011

Balmenach Speyside Single Malt Hogshead RLA 128.5 ABV 59.8% Full Cask 2011

Situated in breathtaking scenery in the hills above Cromdale, the Balmenach distillery has been described by Jim Murray (Whisky Bible) as "almost the archetypal Speysider", but not necessarily in the way one may expect of the region famed for perfumed, delicate malts.

Founded in 1824 it is known for its ultra-traditional style, condensing their spirit in old-school worm tubs rather than modern shell and tube condensers. The result is a hefty, meaty single malt that has long been jealously sought out by blenders to prop up lighter malts and grains and only very rarely does it get the chance to shine as a single malt.

That is starting to change, though and a number of independent bottlers have seen plenty of success with older-age Balmenach and just last year we had excellent demand for Hunter Laing's magnificent Old & Rare 1989 expression, which flew out at over £300 per bottle!

Tasting Note
Approaching the magical age of 10 years old, this is a phenomenal cask of a classic, yet unique Speysider. It's profile is a relic of a bygone age courtesy of the ultra-traditional production methods. A rich, oily texture, firm, meaty mouthfeel and pungent profile of spicey bourbon and rye characteristics make for a dynamic whisky that has the stuffing, and remarkably high ABV to mature for many years to come as it takes on more mellow, deeply pitched aromatics. This is a strong candidate for finishing in a very active cask as the spirit's body will easily stand up to Oloroso wood or even PX.

2014

Craigellachie Speyside Single Malt Full Cask RLA 124.3 Pedro Ximenez Hogshead 60.5% 2014 Not as soft as a typical Speyside, Craigellachie was referred to by Master of Malt as "the Bad Boy of Speyside" and is well known and prized for its more "masculine" character, it’s oily texture and meatiness. This is a distillery that does best in Bourbon barrels which allow the natural intensity of the spirit to shine through without cluttering it with over-sherried distraction.

Craigellachie has had a recent resurgence in attention, not least because they only started putting out official bottlings for the first time in decades in 2014. Previously making most of its impact in the White Horse blend which won Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible Blend of the Year in 2007 it was high time for a resurgence of the magical malt behind the brand.

A stylish rebranding and refocus on the distillery’s more intense, bold spirit has led to a new generation of devotees and prices for official distillery bottlings are high, giving a definitive reference point for valuation on casks that are held by patient owners for the years to come.

Glen Spey Speyside Single Malt Refill Bourbon Hogshead RLA 115 ABV 59.9 Full Cask 2010

The Glen Spey distillery is one of the last true hidden gems of Speyside because although it has been operating since the 1870s in the heart of Scotland’s whisky country, it is only recently that it has developed a cult following of malt connoisseurs and devotees.

One of just a handful of distilleries to use spirit purifiers, which are in essence condensers which recharge a portion of the distillate beach into the pot still, Glen Spey has a reputation for producing a delicate, light-bodied spirit that ages with style and grace rather than power and richness. While only a few bottlings of Glen Spey have been released from the distillery (under the much-beloved Flora & Fauna series for instance) it is quickly gaining traction among independent bottlers and as such the reputation is on the rise.

With more than a decade already built into the age of this hogshead and a solid ABV pushing 60%, there is plenty of time to see this through to the 20-year mark and realise some impressive returns, or bottle a phenomenal whisky. Alternatively, you could just bottle it at 12-15 years (perhaps with a judicious cask finish) and have a spectacular, classy Speyside Single Malt on your hands.

Linkwood 1st Fill Oloroso Barrel Cask No. 2107148 Full Cask 2021

Linkwood's 200th year distilling since it's foundation in 1821 sees it making the best whiskies in its history, thanks in part to a reinvigorated interest in the distillery's spirit as a single malt, though this Speyside gem wouldn't have made it to 200 years old if not for the essential role it played in the Johnny Walker blended whiskies.

An undeniably finessed whisky that responds equally well to sherry as it does to bourbon wood, giving those who invest in casks of its spirit a multitude of options further down the road when it comes to finishing and bottling. That being said, there is a decided benefit to having aged since distillation in a single cask, in particular if that cask is 1st fill Oloroso sherry.

We are pleased to have secured a number of 2021s in a year when many distillers are severely cutting their allocations of casks to the market and it is a particular coup barrels specially selected for us; bourbon-sized barrels previously used for top-grade Oloroso sherry giving a smaller surface area than ex sherry hogsheads, butts or puncheons. Therefore the whisky will develop relatively quickly, rewarding the years more profoundly than lower-quality, lower cost refill barrels.

Macduff Highland Single Malt Refill Hogshead RLA 136.8 ABV 60.2% Full Cask 2014 ”Beware the Thane of Fife…”

The Macduff Distillery has no connection to the literary nemesis of MacBeth, but instead takes its name from the nearby fishing port of the same name, which was formerly known by its Gaelic name of an Dùn but was purchased in whole by William Duff, the 1st Earl of Fife and renamed in honour of his legendary ancestor.

Best known as the source of the Glen Deveron single malt, which has at times been the name of the distillery -changing a number of times since its founding in the 1960s - Macduff is a perfectly designed malt distillery built to purpose and designed by renowned architect William Delmé-Evans.

A unique still set up using a gentle upward slant for the lyne-arms and a 90° kink in the swan necks, coupled with cold water condensers results in a nutty impressive spirit which retains a lot of the impurities needed for a characterful whisky. A nutty flavour profile with a struck match element in youth that lends itself to long ageing belies a spirit with excellent structure, perfect for complimenting cask finishes without losing its unique style, where softer whiskies can be obliterated by a characterful cask.

Managed by John Dewar & Sons alongside the legendary Aberfeldy and fellow cult stablemates Craigellachie, Aultmore and Royal Brackla, Macduff is a hidden gem with a lot of upside offering as it does excellent value even for casks with age built in, such as this 7-year-old hogshead.
