Complete Whisky Casks

One of the most compelling alternative assets on the market today is cask whisky. The rates of return achievable by whisky casks dwarf those of fine wine, with less risk though there is a more prohibitive cost of entry with casks starting around £3,600 (equivalent to HK$38,500 or SG$6,685) for newly filled barrels and hogsheads and progressing steadily up to 15-year olds at £15,000-£20,000 (equivalent to HK$161,200 - HK$215,000 or SG$27,845 - SG$37,130), at which point the value and cost can begin to truly soar.

Cru is pleased to offer cask sales from some of the finest, most sought after distilleries in Scotland with blue-chip icons Mortlach, Springbank, Laphroaig and Bowmore all attainable for the right price, while more boutique names including closed distilleries and rare single grains, offering incredible upside for comparatively reasonable sums of money.

With Cru's industry-leading automated sales platform designed for fine wine and the first in the world to be applied effectively to cask whisky, there is not where better to invest in this remarkable asset. Whether you're looking for en primeur new make casks, maturing casks with superb upside or venerably mature 25+-year-old single malts we have a uniquely varied supply chain and agile platform built upon our long-standing expertise and close contacts within the industry.

2008

Glenglassaugh Highland Single Malt Refill Hogshead Cask No. 111 Full Cask 2014 The Glenglassaugh distillery is one of the great success stories of the 21st century in Scotch Whisky though the roots of the distillery’s success go back much further than its current period of operation.

Founded in 1875 by James Moir, a local grocer in the nearby town of Portsoy, the idea was to supplement his burgeoning business with proprietary whisky that met the highest quality standards of the day. Situated on a site to the west of town to take advantage of a superb water source; the pure Glassaugh Springs, the distillery lies just out with the boundaries of Speyside, making this a Highland malt, though one very much in the Speyside style.

The operation was a tremendous success heading into the whisky boom of the Victorian era and within twenty years the distillery was snapped up by Highland Distillers, the forerunner of the Edrington Group (Macallan & Highland Park). The 1900s saw the expansion and reconstruction of the distillery as it began to supply malt for the likes of Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse.

After the complicated problems of the 1980s and a 23-year stretch mothballed, Glenglassaugh was purchased by new owners, reopened and began releasing pre-1986 stock as limited edition single malts, winning numerous awards in the process and placing the distillery firmly in the spotlight as a high-quality, craft producer. Since the distillery’s acquisition by Brown-Forman it has benefitted from the same treatment as legendary stablemates BenRiach and GlenDronach.

Cask Note
This 2014 Refill Hogshead is an excellent long term proposition with excellent upside given the increasingly prominent reputation of the distillery. Glenglassaugh has made a name for itself in recent years with distinctive cask finishes; including wine and sherry, so this relatively understated wood type will do well to see it through the initial, most lengthy period of ageing but will easily lend itself to re-racking into more active wood further down the line.

Highland Single Malt 'Inchfad' Distilled at Loch Lomond Bourbon Barrel OLA 124.8 ABV 63.5 Full Cask 2016
Inc. GST: SG$22,202.45
2016

Highland Single Malt 'Inchfad' Distilled at Loch Lomond Bourbon Barrel OLA 124.8 ABV 63.5 Full Cask 2016 High road or low road, there is no place in Scotland more touchingly beautiful than Loch Lomond. The modern day serenity, gentle scenery and tragically poetic history of gallant highland clans make it a place of pilgrimage for people from all over the world. A place where dramatic lochsides create secluded glens; sanctuaries for ancient oak woodlands, red deer and feral sheep, Loch Lomond's bonnie banks captures Scotland's spirit in microcosm.

Though relatively new by the region's standards, Loch Lomond's eponymous distillery is much the same; capturing the essence of the country's spirit under one roof. Producing mostly unpeated malt, but also moderately peated, heavily peated, grain whisky and even some rare peated grain, Loch Lomond has many tricks up its sleeve and presents each one with style and quality.

Much like Croftengea, Inchfad is a heavily peated spirit (albeit a bit 'peatier') that was produced at Loch Lomond, but it was discontinued and has since found cult status among cask collectors. Not quite a closed distillery or silent still, but it is a malt that will never be made again, adding to its scarcity, without yet driving the price up. As the market becomes more sophisticated we can't imagine that remaining the case for long!

Named for one of the small isles on the loch, Inchfad was once home to a small distillery until the mid 1800s, the ruins of which can still be seen today.

Highland Single Malt Distilled at Deanston Refill Barrel Cask No. 301704 Full Cask 2021
A stablemate of classic Islay distillery Bunnahabhainn and the iconic Tobermory Distillery on Mull, Deanston is a hidden gem of a Highland Malt. Founded on the banks of the River Teith in 1795 as a cotton mill, the beautiful stone building was converted to its present purpose in 1965. Drawing water from the river which also powers its own hydro-energy facility, it has the distinction of being the only energy self-sufficient distillery in Scotland.

The spirit produced here is a classically fine, balanced Highland Malt with a bit of punchiness to its profile that does well ageing relatively unhindered in ex-Bourbon wood as is the case here. The distillery’s production of bottled single malt is small with 85% of the output going into blends. That gives holders of Deanston casks a point of relative rarity that very little of this delicious spirit is bottled as single malt, and even rarer, bottled at an advanced age. As such this will greatly reward patience.

Holyrood 'Golden Promise' 1st Fill Oloroso Hogshead Cask No. 231 Full Cask 2021

The focus in this casks is the barley variety; distilled from a mash bill of 100% pure Golden Promise barley - the same type used in the distillation of The Macallan and Glengoyne single malts, and filled them into 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry hogsheads (in which Golden Promise has shown excellent success at both the aforementioned distilleries) of the highest possible quality.

Filled in April of this year, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to follow the development of a new distillery with one of their earliest distillations. Imagine having a cask of 2001 Port Charlotte bought for under £17 IB per bottle when casks now go for £60,000-plus! The one difference is that Port Charlotte is just a sub-brand from the Bruichladdich distillery which had been running for many years already; here we have a new distillery entirely founded with a commitment to making the best possible whisky in the heart of Scotland’s capital.

Holyrood 'Golden Promise' 1st Fill Oloroso Hogshead Cask No. 238 Full Cask 2021

The Holyrood Distillery is the first malt distillery to open in Edinburgh in nearly 100 years and its founding comes amidst a truly exciting time for the whisky industry in Scotland. With an innovative and ambitious spirit sweeping the country buttressed by steadily growing global demand for the world’s most famous distillate, Scotch whisky has been reinvigorated by new start-ups and micro distillers placing the ancestral homeland of whisky back at the forefront of this global industry.

Founded by Canadians Rob & Kelly Carpenter and Scot David Robertson, it is in many ways remarkable that Holyrood is the first malt distillery for so long to make a home in Edinburgh (Glenkinchie is well out of town in Pencaitland and North British is single grain only). The city has a long and proud history of brewing and distilling (legal and otherwise) and the city’s natural underground water supply is known through history as “the Charmed Circle” for its purity and abundance.

Inchgower Speyside Single Malt Refill Bourbon Hogshead Full Cask 2020 Cask No. 301490
Inc. GST: SG$17,547.95
2020

Inchgower Speyside Single Malt Refill Bourbon Hogshead Full Cask 2020 Cask No. 301490

Founded in 1871 as “The Great Distillery of Inchgower” near the fly fishing haven of Buckie on the River Spey, Inchgower is a true Blue-Blood of Speyside. Small scale by owners Diageo’s standards, the spirit running off of Inchgower’s stills is remarkably hard to find in official bottlings. Once a popular member of the Flora & Fauna stable it has been sadly discontinued and independent bottlings remain the prime outlet for this refined Speysider.

While Auchroisk shows notes of fresh-cut grass, Inchgower’s aromatic profile is more reminiscent of dried hay; red apple rather than green and summer flowers rather than spring blossoms. Its complexity is what has earned it a central role in the world famous Bell’s blended scotch whisky alongside stablemate Blair Athol and as it matures, that complexity comes in with unique elements of aniseed and even turmeric.

Best aged in Bourbon but no slouch in Sherry wood either, this is a versatile spirit and one that has show it can fetch admirable prices when bottled at an advanced age. We expect the discontinuation of the Flora & Fauna bottling coupled with the success of Indy icons such as That Boutique-y Whisky Company, Càrn Mor and Douglas Laing give this cask ample scope for value appreciation in the medium to long term.

We are pleased to have secured a number of 2021s in a year when many distillers are severely cutting their allocations of casks to the market and it is a particular coup's barrels specially selected for us; bourbon-sized barrels previously used for top-grade Oloroso sherry giving a smaller surface area than ex-sherry hogsheads, butts or puncheons. Therefore the whisky will develop relatively quickly, rewarding the years more profoundly than lower-quality, lower-cost refill barrels.

2015

Tullibardine Highland Single Malt Red Burgundy Pièce RLA 150 ABV 69% Full Cask 2016 Few producers of spirit, Scotch or other can claim as dynamic a history as Tullibardine. Tullibardine’s modern history begins in 1949 though there was a brewery on the site dating back to 1488 which made ale for the coronation of James VI, (later James I of England). Originally part of the Whyte & MacKay portfolio it was under-appreciated and mothballed in 1995, until it was bought by independent investors setting up the Tullibardine Distillery Ltd. who resumed production and rejuvenated the brand.

A classic Highland gentleman, it is a whisky of fine character and a good example of the terroir of whisky as the distillery draws its water from the Danny Burn flowing from the Ochil Hills, known as some of the purest in the country (the same source of Highland Spring water). This splendid source gives Tullibardine its soft generosity, not to mention its agreeable nature, affording it a remarkable propensity to take to wine casks better than most.
