(6x75cl) 2012Vinous (91)
Muskmelon, clove and nut oil on the nose, with a hint of apple blossom. Zesty, almost herbal peach pit flavor accented by delicate spices. Elegant and persistent on the back end, with a piquant slatey note, this kabinett is drier than some of years past and is my call for the finest kabinett of the vintage.Inc. GSTSG$2,669.85 -
(3x150cl) 2016Vinous (91)
A penetrating nose features gooseberry, cassis, apricot and apple, and suggestions of seeds and pits – as well as a nettle-like prickle – lend invigorating crunch and piquancy to the brightly animating, cheek-scouring acidity that emerges on the palate. But even as you feel the impact of the acids, there is a sheer juiciness that keeps them from turning uncomfortably severe. And the penetrating finish here, predictably, delivers a decisive impression of wet stone and displays admirable balance as regards sweetness. This sole “regular” Müller Kabinett of its vintage (there’s also an Alte Reben bottling) has plenty of cellar potential. And it makes up nearly half of this year’s combined Scharzhofberg and Braune Kupp production.Inc. GSTSG$1,248.75 -
(12x75cl) 2017James Suckling (93)
An extremely racy and vibrant Kabinett that packs a ton of character into its sleek frame. A rapier-like finish that flashes as it moves across the palate. Drink or hold.Inc. GSTSG$2,601.05 -
Wine Advocate (92+)
The 2018 Scharzhofberger Kabinett (AP #2) is brilliant, clear and coolish on the nose, with cold, wet and clayey yet also crunchy slate aromas and bright fruit. Lush and precise, with lingering salinity and mineral expression, this is a complex and structured Scharzhofberger Kabinett with great aging potential. Tasted in June 2019.Inc. GSTSG$1,401.35 -
(1x75cl) 2020Vinous (93)
The “regular” 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett (bearing A.P. #3) leads with quince and peach accented by mint, cress, ginger and lemon, setting up an overall impression of coolness, but also of brightness, with stimulating cut and pungency analogous to that of the corresponding Braune Kupp. In the background is a greenhouse-like amalgam of flowers and foliage. The phenolic concentration here belies a vintage with relatively generous yields even as the efficacious acidity and levity defy preconceptions concerning a year marked by summer heat and drought. The multifaceted finish, transparent to wet stone underpinnings, is tongue-tinglingly vibrant. Here is a Riesling Kabinett to really grab and hold your attention even as it delivers consummate refreshment and a bit of thought-provoking intrigue to accompany its entertainment value.Inc. GSTSG$214.66 -

Vinous (94)
The 2023 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett comes from a completely south-facing gray slate site, always cooled by the west wind. Tender lemon spells tartness on the nose, opening into tart Reine Claude while remaining on that citrus track. The palate offers finesse and lemony brightness, a vivid spray of ripe Amalfi lemon with delicate sweetness reminiscent of lemon confit and sorbet. Beautifully taut and wonderfully light.Inc. (6x75cl) 2012Vinous (94)
Subtle floral aromas of peach nectar, ripe cherry, white raisin and lemon oil. The velvety, creamy tropical fruit flavors remain bright and elegant thanks to the wine's refreshing acidity. Juicy, spicy and long, with a pure, delicately luscious aftertaste. Can spätlese be better than this? In any event, this is my choice as the best of its ilk in 2012.Inc. GSTSG$3,356.55 -
Vinous (98)
The 2013 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese was opened for comparison, as 2013 was a similarly challenging vintage to 2023. The nose offers a deep, ethereal breath of lifted hayflower, chamomile and tansy steeped in lemon oil. These sinus-clearing aromas color Mirabelle jelly on the palate and lead to naked stone, to slate vibrating with lemon zestiness, calm now but exquisitely radiant and intense with depth. The lightness of body is amazing and the elegance disarming, as is the length. All of this has something of soothing, healing balm.Inc. GSTSG$1,876.63 -
(6x75cl) 2014Vinous (96)
Whereas the corresponding Braune Kupp auction Spätlese represented a cask selection, this Scharzhofberger reflects a separate picking from the estate’s oldest vines, undertaken with the express intention of achieving auction potential. A head-turning nose and a palate luscious yet cheek-pinching in brightness and mouth-shakingly vibrant deliver white peach, grapefruit and lime wreathed in freesia and infused with Ceylon tea, moss and crushed stone. And as if my mouth wasn’t wrung out already, this beauty’s formidably penetrating, downright reverberative finish – transparent to a shimmering wealth of floral and mineral elements – exhibits tannic grip and milks the salivary glands with its salinity. I fantasized while tasting it that some of those collectors typically in a position to bid on this wine at auction might be scared off by its singular intensity!Inc. GSTSG$1,677.95 -
Wine Advocate (94-95)
The 2018 Scharzhofberger Spätlese offers a very fine and delicate, coolish, precise and flinty bouquet with bright and elegant fruit notes. On the palate, this is a finessed, beautifully round and lush yet filigreed Spätlese with sensual, silky-textured fruit and a long, complex, well-structured and salty-piquant finish. A gorgeous classic from the Scharzhofberg. Tasted from AP #6 in June 2019.Inc. GSTSG$2,862.65 -
