About Vietti
A stalwart of Barolo, Vietti is often mentioned in the same breath as other great Barolo producers like Elio Grasso and Aldo Conterno. Formerly a family farm, Patriarch Mario Vietti started bottling wines on his own in 1919. It is from here that they began to export exquisite wines from mighty cru Barolo to the excellent value Barbara d'Alba to the joyously sweet and light Moscato d'Asti.
Vietti is also a pioneer in the region. During a time when blending grapes from different vineyards was the prevalent practice, Vietti was also amongst some of the first to champion single-vineyard bottlings, drawing inspiration from the climats of Burgundy.
Each bottle of Vietti wine is truly unique. Since 1974, each label has been designed and signed by artists to reflect the character of the vintage.

Jeb Dunnuck (98)A medium red hue, the 2020 Barolo Rocche Di Castiglione offers more complexity and is more nuanced in the glass, with notes of dried raspberries, tangerine, roses, dried herbs, and cedar. Medium-bodied, it is crunchy with an elegant feel but has balanced structure and retains a somewhat more chiseled feel that’s true to the vintage. It has a lot to enjoy now and also has a wide drinking window. Drink 2025-2050. |

Wine Advocate (98+)This is a serious beauty that reminds us of the brilliant work underway at this leading estate. Yes, ownership has changed over recent years, but this wine remains "Rocche-solid." From an epic vintage, the Vietti 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a classic with those elegant mineral notes of glacial till and flake salt followed by carefully ripened fruit, blackcurrant and a finely tuned floral note of fragrant tea leaf that hits the high notes. The effect is ethereal but also precise. Fruit comes from two parcels, one planted in 1958 and the other in 1969, and the blend is half of each fermented together. Fruit was picked on October 1st, and the wine saw 24 days on the skins. The first year this wine was produced is 1961. The Rocche di Castiglione site has 35% sand with marl soils that continue to evolve, kicking out more new sand. Only 3,728 bottles exist, and that's the bad news. |
