Tenuta di Biserno
About Tenuta di Biserno
Nestled amongst the hills of Bibbona in the Upper Maremma is the stunningly coastal 90 hectare estate of Tenuta di Biserno. It is, to which the name of its most prestigious cuvée alludes, a member of the legendary Antinori stable which forged a path for the “Super Tuscan” movement of the 1980s when both Ornellaia and Masseto were founded by Lodovico Antinori.
Having established Bolgheri as a true fine-wine region to compete with the very greatest terroirs across the globe, an employee extoled the virtues of a piece of land just above the Bolgheri DOC to Lodovico in 1994. Describing his first visit as “love at first sight”, Antinori was enamoured by not only the quality of the soils but also the wonderful sea breeze which swirls around these vines bringing with them a cooling effect.
Cabernet Franc, not yet as devastatingly popular as it is today, was chosen to be the predominant varietal for Tenuta di Biserno thanks to the aforementioned coastal breeze. This varietal's great fault is its tendency towards greenness when picked too early, a particular problem in the lower area of Bolgheri where the scorching heat means harvest must begin earlier to avoid desiccation. Further up the hills, Cabernet Franc can be left far longer on the vine to mature to full ripeness thanks to the significantly lower temperatures.
Sourced from a choice plot of 6 hectares of the most gravel-dominant and highly situated soils is the formidable Ludovico cuvée, the top wine from this amazing estate.

The 2016 Il Pino di Biserno is powerful, if rather somber. Dark fruit, scorched earth, graphite, leather, tobacco and torrefaction add to an impression of depth and gravitas. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, as it needs at least a few years in bottle to shed some of its formidable tannic heft. Even today, though, the 2016 is impressive. I especially admire the way it pulses with energy and tension.Inc. GSTSG$568.87 -

A deep ruby/magenta color, the 2022 Il Pino Di Biserno starts to show more mineral-inflected notes of graphite, preserved strawberries, blackberries, cocoa, and sweet herbs. Full-bodied, the palate expands with ripe tannins, even acidity, and darker mineral undercurrents, as well as a hint of gamey richness and notes of tea leaf through the mid-palate and rather long finish. We skipped over the 2010 vintage because Lodovico Antinori is less pleased with that wine's evolution. There is little doubt, however, concerning the massive appeal of the 2009 Biserno. Specifically, I need to underline how beautifully the wine is drinking at this very moment in time. If you have a bottle, it's time to pop that cork. You will be treated to a beautifully balanced wine that feels ever so natural and comfortable in its plus-sized intensity. The wine walks with a heavy gait, but it does so with the impeccable grace of a classic dancer. Dark fruit segues to spice, leather, smoke and cigar box. The wine's substantial textural richness caresses the palate. This vintage is right up there with the excellent 2015 release.Inc. GSTSG$865.02 -

Compared to the other wines in this vertical tasting, the 2012 Biserno plays its cards closer to the chest. This vintage is linear, tight and ultimately less expressive when you really get down to it. The bouquet is characterized by its sharp directness. It emits quick pulses of blackberry, spice, smoke, leather and grilled herb. All the essential elements are there, and the aromas do very much deliver what you should expect of this important Tuscan blend of noble Bordeaux grapes. Yet, the volume is played at lower decibels in 2012 compared to the veritable chorus of exceptional harmonies played loud in 2013 and my favorite 2015 edition.Inc. GSTSG$879.00 -

Lodovico Antinori's 2015 Biserno is loaded with copious crème de cassis, blackberry jam, spice, lavender, violet and crushed rocks. The 2019 Biserno is flush with graphite mineral aromas and another layer of depth and complexity, with balsamic, Mediterranean herbs, and dark chocolate. It is composed of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, with a small proportion of Petit Verdot. The palate is full, structured, and ripe with kirsch and a dark chocolate covered cherry. It has an elegant touch of French oak, with cedar, vanilla bean, and more turned mineral earth. Produced since 2007 in Bibbona, bordering Bolgheri, Lodovico is a relatively young label managed by Lodovico Antinori. Annual production is below 10,000 bottles, and the exact blend is not revealed. Cabernet Franc-based, blended with tiny amounts of Merlot and Petit Verdot, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged 16 months in barrique, with notably less racking compared to an equivalent Bordeaux. The 2018 is not completely representative (try the outstanding and more concentrated 2016), but it describes fairly well the graceful, Margaux-like elegance of this SuperTuscan. Parma Violets, cedar, eucalyptus, wild raspberry and coffee grounds outline its complexity. Silky tannins are integrated with refreshing acidity.Inc. GSTSG$1,563.21 -

Decanter (98)
Silky tannins are integrated with refreshing acidity. In BondSG$1,415.00 -
