Dermot Sugrue is the winemaker behind many of England's best sparkling wines over the last 15 years. Previously the winemaker at Nyetimber, he left in 2006 to establish the Wiston Estate Winery, where he makes not only Wiston Estate but a host of other leading English sparkling wines. But it is the wines under his own label, Sugrue South Downs, which are dearest to his heart. In 2006 he planted just 1ha in the monastic vineyard at Storrington Priory, on the chalk based soils in the South Downs. This is now the home vineyard of Surgue South Downs. The first three vintage releases of his Trouble with Dreams - made exclusively from fruit grown at Storrington Priory - placed Dermot firmly at the top of the English sparkling wine tree. He subsequently acquired the beautiful Mount Harry vineyard (see below) and since 2013 his wines incorporate the best of these two vineyards, grown on the finest chalk-based soils in the South Downs, England’s Côte de Blancs.
