The 2009 Bonnes Mares opens with knockout aromatics that meld into layers of fresh, vibrant fruit. Medium in body yet wonderfully intense in its flavors, the Bonnes Mares impresses for its class and balance. An array of dark fruit, minerals, violets and white flowers linger on the pointed, saline finish. Groffier’s vines in Bonnes Mares sit on a slope with both terres rouges and terres blanches. (vinified with about 33% whole clusters): Good deep red. Ineffable high-pitched aromas of crushed raspberry, cranberry, blood orange, menthol and spices. Dense and tactile but at the same time juicy and vibrant, showing excellent cut and saline complexity to its red fruit and menthol flavors. Notes of lavender, garrigue and mint contribute to the impression of inner-mouth lift. Some oak comes up with air and carries through a very long, spicy finish. Really superb fruit and perfectly judged use of stems here--and not at all heavily extracted. Nicolas Groffier noted that he's now privileging clarity over roundess for his Bonnes-Mares.Inc. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was showing quite a lot of fruit extraction on the nose, darker than the Bonnes-Mares from either Bruno Clair or Domaine de la Vougeraie: blackberry and wild strawberry scents mixed with sous-bois and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a fine line of acidity with good density. This is a mouth-filling and voluminous Bonnes-Mares with a tarty, spicy finish that suggests this should age well in bottle. Tasted September 2016.Inc. GSTSG$3,873.27 -

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a very well defined, earthy bouquet but backed up by sufficient red berry fruit. Touches of woodland come through with continued aeration, a touch of autumn bonfire. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. Quite supple in the mouth for a 2014 with touches of tobacco, black pepper and light spices that emerge on the sappy finish. Superb. Tasted at the Domaine.Inc. GSTSG$3,873.27 -

It has a really beautiful bouquet that you could easily mistake for Christophe Roumier’s: blackberry, blueberry, a hint of crushed violet and fine mineralité. The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was bottled just before Christmas 2018. (6x75cl) 2022Robert Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutgrains 2022 epitomises the quintessential Burgundy craftsmanship. Cultivated in the heart of Bourgogne’s esteemed vineyards, this exquisite wine is a masterful blend of Pinot Noir grapes meticulously selected from sustainably managed terroirs. Under the expert guidance of vintner Robert Groffier, known for his dedication to traditional Burgundian techniques, the Passetoutgrains undergoes a delicate fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving its vibrant fruit character. The wine is then aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, imparting subtle complexity and refined tannins. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious balance of ripe red berries, elegant floral notes, and a hint of earthy undertones, culminating in a long, graceful finish. Robert Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutgrains 2022 is a testament to the producer’s unwavering commitment to quality and the rich heritage of Burgundy, making it an exceptional choice for connoisseurs seeking sophistication and depth in every sip.

The 2014 Bourgogne Rouge, from two vineyards, one tucked just below Clos Vougeot and the other in Morey Saint Denis in Chaponnières averaging around 50-years in age, had only just finished its malolactic fermentation. It has quite a tight black cherry and blueberry-scented bouquet, a hint of crushed violet in the background. The palate is bold and forthright with sappy black fruit, a nice saline touch in the mouth with a controlled, quite citrus-fresh finish. This is a Bourgogne Rouge with substance and in keeping with Groffier's upfront style.Inc. GSTSG$756.90 -

(bottled the day before my December visit, after spending a month in cuve; represents a yield of just 20 hectoliters per hectare): Bright red-ruby. Rather wild aromas of crushed cherry, black raspberry, blueberry and violet, plus a leathery nuance. Sweet and full for Bourgogne, conveying an almost chocolatey ripeness to its dark berry flavors. And yet this wine has a pH of just 3.22, according to Nicolas Groffier, who aged it with a lot of its lees and bottled it without fining or filtration. Groffier made just 15 barrels of this juice, versus a more typical 33 to 38. This 2015 boasts vibrant acidity and uncommon density for its appellation, but then this bottling is almost always an outperformer.Inc. GSTSG$787.50 -

Good medium red. Spicy red fruits complicated by soil nuances on the nose. Showed a captivating red cherry perfume with air, along with harmonious acidity and considerable finesse. Finishes juicy and firmly tannic, with noteworthy floral persistence for its appellation. Groffier told me he did no extraction at all for half of this cuvée. As in many past vintages, this should make a serious Bourgogne and yet it also conveys a relaxed quality. (Incidentally, the estate's Passetoutgrains, which includes one-third Gamay, is also a winner in 2016, offering juicy, savory red fruit aromas and flavors and a firm finish.)Inc. GSTSG$590.21

Groffier has long produced one of the better examples of this appellation, and the 2023 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain (which contains 25% Gamay) is a solid effort, with a lively, medium-bodied palate and aromas of dark berry fruit. In BondSG$284.00 -

This is a Bourgogne Rouge with substance and in keeping with Groffier's upfront style. In BondSG$635.00 -

This 2015 boasts vibrant acidity and uncommon density for its appellation, but then this bottling is almost always an outperformer. In BondSG$671.00 -

(Incidentally, the estate's Passetoutgrains, which includes one-third Gamay, is also a winner in 2016, offering juicy, savory red fruit aromas and flavors and a firm finish.)In BondSG$490.00
